In addition to what I wrote in my last post, I'd like to add some thoughts in relation to ride development. It's probably already an industry standard practice to develop rides based on/around successful IP franchises - Pirates of the Caribbean, Tron, Star Wars, Marvel, Avatar, Harry Potter, Jurassic, Transformers, you name it. But I happened to wonder the following while recalling a ride concept I came up with for some sort of creative contest in WDI: Would it be worthwhile considering whether it makes sense to take one step further? That is to say, have a revolutional ride concept first and manage to work with writers/director to inplant it into IP franchises with appropriate theming.

Deadpool & Wolverine is set to his theaters in 2 Months (July 26) and Ticket Sales are already outpacing Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018). Pre-Sales are currently the biggest for 2024. Ryan Reynolds returns as Wade Wilson (Deadpool) in the film. Deadpool & Wolverine will serve as the 3rd Installment in the Deadpool Franchise following 2016's Deadpool and 2018's Deadpool 2. Deadpool & Wolverine will also be the only Deadpool film that is part of the MCU following Disney's Acquisition of 20th Century Studios (Fox) in 2019. 20th Century Studios have owned the rights to the X-Men Franchise since 1994. Deadpool & Wolverine will also mark the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine who was previously last seen in 2017's Logan. Hugh Jackman's first appearance as Wolverine was in 2000's X-Men. Deadpool (2016) earned 782 Million Dollars Worldwide (363 Million Domestically) and Deadpool 2 (2018) earned 785 Million Dollars Worldwide (324 Million Domestically). Five Things to Know THis Week Point 4) Disney – Zero Shareholder Value in Almost 10 Years: Despite buying Lucasfilm to take over the massive Star Wars franchise, and turning Marvel into a superhero film blockbuster machine, Disney ($DIS) has created no shareholder value in almost a decade. The film franchises are producing lesser returns on bigger budgets, but the key issue is the loss of value at ESPN. The sports network used to be a $10 a month tax on over 100 million US cable subscribers, but streaming television is allowing people to cut the cord and avoid paying for content they don’t want.   DKI Takeaway:  ESPN always had an abusive business model grabbing over $100/year from almost every household in the country regardless of their interest in sports. For The Atlantic, Shirley Li with a great article about the summer movie season. 'Until these perceptions change, though, this summer will appear to be a strange one, an anomalous dip caused by months of low earnings that haven’t encouraged general audiences to head to theaters on a regular basis. In the meantime, the industry is trying to manipulate so many variables—which actors could become box-office draws, which franchises aren’t experiencing fatigue, which projects should stream rather than play in theaters, which dates might be most appealing for release—but no individual movie will cure Hollywood’s box-office blues. Instead, Dergarabedian Comscore, Inc. said, “Stability is key … Every piece of this puzzle relies on the other.” The moviegoing experience itself needs to be routinely appealing to be lucrative—and a meme-worthy popcorn bucket or film-title portmanteau will only stoke interest for so long. The Walt Disney Company's widely panned live action film, "The Marvels," drew in a dismal $47 million domestically during its opening weekend — the worst performance in the MCU franchise history. What it means: Disney's film struggles will take a lot of time to correct. The disappointing box office results come after the media giant reported strong earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter and increased its annual cost cutting goal to $7.5 billion, up from the previous $5.5 billion set in February. But despite the rally in shares following the results, analysts warned there are still pain points ahead, particularly surrounding its content. "I don't think the studio is going to be an engine that's going to help Disney grow for the next 18 months," said Doug Creutz, analyst at TD Cowen. "I don't think it's going to get worse, but I don't think it's going to get better either." "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" got squashed, while "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" just seems lost. Movie studios should consider the following: the story matters. Relying on franchises and sequels has been the bread-and-butter for studios, and 2024 box office will be no different, except audience fatigue is setting in. Unlike the "Field of Dreams", just because you build it doesn't mean they will come. Besides establishing an identity and voice, building a brand heavily involves understanding your audience. Unfortunately, too many movie studios have missed their mark over the years with poorly conceived reboots, sequels and story lines than audiences seem to be less entertained by. Marvel and DC Studios come to mind because both have built major franchises with creative storytelling and characters audiences grew up with. Unfortunately, they along with other studios are quickly discovering compelling storytelling matters. In other words, all the glittery superheroes in tights and amazing sound effects don't and can't make up for a poor script. Having said that, the box office has a scintillating list of planned releases that reads like an 80s revival combined with a Comic Con event.
