"Are WeDo Bristol's new Real Madrid...?" ...well obviously not. We are a team of 6 with a nice logo! On Saturday night however, when Madrid were suddenly linked with Julio Alvarez who in my opinion is everything I value in a potential hire/signing (e.g ambitious, progressive and more importantly, someone who as a World Cup winner, has happily sat on the sidelines for 12 months working hard, waiting patiently before seizing his opportunity), it got me thinking, as a business who pride themselves on offering a "Champions League" level of service, who understandably after 18 months of existence have a relatively empty trophy cabinet, how can we reach "Madrid-Level" heights.....? Well we are intent on trying:- 💰 I think I am right in saying we offer the highest commission structure locally- No threshold, up to 60% + quarterly bonus ✈️ We are intent on offering the best lunch clubs/quarterly bonuses/incentive schemes 💡 When it comes to a proven track-record of support, training, development, I would hope most who know us will consider us to be among the best. We have a clear vision. A vision which I am confident will suit anyone in the marketplace keen to work alongside some of the best in the industry, intent on creating something special. We are here for a good time and a long time so if you are considering your options for next season, when we come knocking over the next few weeks, all I can ask is give us 10! 2024 is going to be a cracker.

Operational Excellence. This weekend, I witnessed the PGA of America & PGA TOUR put on a clinic of operational excellence. As someone who has been to countless sporting events, the focus on fan experience and in particular - avoiding lines - was amazing. I know there are other stories out there about things that happened Friday but I can only judge based upon my own experience. Background: I have the goal of seeing every major sporting event in the world and I have 5 events left (before creating a new list). I was scrolling the event guide 3-4 weeks ago and saw excellence point #1 which took this from a "maybe I'll go" to "I am going". Brand Building: As I laid on the couch with my boys and read that tickets are free for kids 15 and under my jaw dropped. Investing in the future of the brand is something I have seen around golf (not all courses - AHEM Woodwind) by getting kids interested in the game. Going was no brainer. Remote parking + Bus Transit: From the time I left the hotel, to the time I got to the venue. I did not stop moving. From the time to took this picture until I got to my car to leave - I did not stop moving. Sure there were slower parts but we kept moving. They clearly did the operational math to determine how many buses do we need at what intervals to make this happen. UNREAL experience. Retail Lines / Service: In the shop, in the check out line, who would ever say "Let's have two people getting hangers off clothes while in line". Let's keep lines moving and checkouts faster by removing this pain point. Person directing to the next open line. Sufficiently sized check out lines. Then before you got outside, UPS store to ship your goods home. They prioritized experience. Food Lines: With the Championship+ ticket, it was basically a convenience store. Walk in, grab what you want, head back out. This was for non-alcohol. Who is the person that said "Hey - what if we just don't charge for food and roll it into the ticket price?" I wanted to be in that meeting. Guess what happened? Alcohol lines were short too. They also had a few free water stations critical on a hot day. Once you experience it...why aren't all sporting events this way? Every year I respond in the Colts survey “have an app where I can order food ahead and pick it up”. Tech App + Screens: The App they created to allow you to see the course map with where YOU are and where each playing group was (on the tee, in the fairway, on the green) was absolutely fabulous. Also, the App pulled in the tickets from Seat Geek so that there was one seamless experience. Then the screens would tell you who is approaching the green or teeing off in the case of Par 3s. Bravo to the PGA for an exceptional fan experience. It is clear that you have a focused agenda centered around lines and the fans. And it showed. Now if we can only talk about having Pepsi as the brand and not Coke...(but I will let that slide).

Luke Littler's phenomenal success in getting to the World Darts Championship Final this week resonates with me in so many ways. Believe it or not, the young Robert 'Newt' Newry, was on the oche in front of a Birmingham crowd over 30 years ago with none other than the 'Crafty Cockney' himself, the late and great Eric Bristow. Unlike Luke The Nuke, I have no real talent for darts and was utterly destroyed, but like Luke, Eric was humble and generous with his post match encouragement. I knew though that my skills lay elsewhere! This is what as TA professionals and hiring managers we can, and should, take away from this week's championship final: 1. Skills come in many forms. Luke clearly has incredible eye-hand co-ordination (hard skill) yet what got him to the final was as much his ability to handle pressure, quick thinking, and self-belief (soft skills). Add to that, his humbleness, unpretension and determination (more soft skills), all of which meant he rapidly became an audience and media favourite (key to sponsorship). Once again we are reminded that experience and hard skills alone do not equal success. 2. He gave hope and belief to thousands of people who have potential that you can make it to the top by demonstrating what you are capable of. This is the joy and brilliance of an 'open' competition. It's not just for the top seeds with lots of experience. If we approached hiring in the same way, how many Luke's would we discover and give opportunity to? 3. Potential needs nuturing. Luke has a great coach and received lots of encouragement. There is talent and capability out there and the role of a hiring manager today is not simply to 'manage' but also to 'develop'. In a world short of digital skills and growing social inequality, hiring for potential and developing skills should be the goal of every organisation. So as you prepare for 2024 and new goals, skills-based hiring will be on many of your company plans - think carefully about how you can open up your talent pipeline to the 'Lukes' of the world.
