Opinion from David Cohn | How AI will reshape journalism’s narrative in 2024 “In the intricate dance of media evolution, 2024 marks a pivotal moment, when generative artificial intelligence steps into the spotlight, simultaneously leading and following in the rhythm of innovation,” Cohn writes. “This dance is not new. It echoes past transformations in social media where pioneers like BuzzFeed and Vice once led, challenging legacy media to adapt or fall behind. The music, however, has changed, and with it, the steps.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/emrnJdfK

Generative artificial intelligence brings challenges and opportunities for journalism. David Cohn focuses on the opportunities AI could bring. One big opportunity is with engagement journalism, an approach that fosters two-way interactions between journalists and the audience and makes journalism more participatory and transparent. Engagement journalism goes beyond traditional one-way communication and can build a more collaborative relationship with readers, viewers, and listeners. Key characteristics of engagement journalism include: ✅ Audience participation: Encourages active participation and contributions from the audience, such as story ideas, feedback, and community events. ✅ Community-centric focus: Places strong emphasis on understanding and serving the needs and interests of the local or online community, tailoring content to audience concerns and needs. ✅ Dialogue and conversation: Promotes open dialogue and conversation between journalists and audience, creating opportunities for discussions and debates on news topics. ✅ Collaborative storytelling: Engages the community in collaborative storytelling, where the audience may contribute personal experiences, perspectives, or additional information to enhance the narrative. ✅ Social media integration: Uses social media platforms to connect with the audience, share content, and encourage discussions around news stories. ✅ Crowdsourcing: Gathers information, insights, or opinions from the audience, involving them in the research or fact-checking process. ✅ Public service journalism: Focuses on serving the public interest and addressing community concerns, often through investigative reporting or campaigns that seek positive change. ✅ Events and workshops: Organizes community events, workshops, or town hall meetings to facilitate face-to-face interactions between journalists and the audience. ✅ Transparency and accountability: Emphasizes transparency in the journalistic process, providing insight into editorial decisions and being accountable to the audience. ✅ Metrics and feedback: Utilizes audience metrics and feedback to assess the impact of stories, understand audience preferences, and make data-informed decisions. ✅ Solutions journalism: Explores and highlights potential solutions to problems rather than focusing only on problems, aiming to inspire positive change within the community. ✅ Interactive multimedia: Incorporates interactive multimedia elements, such as polls, surveys, quizzes, and multimedia storytelling, to enhance engagement. Engagement journalism is a great way for news organizations to build community and trust with the public they serve. #journalism

Great report. Would be interesting to repeat in, say, 5 year's time, to see if the notion "extension of pre-existing technology" is shifting.
