In Western Australia's Pilbara region, a leading miner faced a major challenge with 12kg steel OEM tray sling retaining pins on their Caterpillar 793F haul trucks.
With a commitment to safety, the miner teamed up with us to lighten these pins, making handling more efficient for the entire maintenance team. Through meticulous analysis, Geographe replaced the steel with a high-tensile material, preserving strength while significantly reducing mass.
But that's not all! We also designed an ergonomic handle, reducing the risk of on-site injuries. Resulting in a solution that reduced the risk of injuries during pin handling at the tier 1 miner's site.

** FIRE SUPPRESSION IN THE MINING INDUSTRY **
Fire suppression systems play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and protection of mining operations. Here are some key points highlighting the importance of fire suppression systems in mining.
Prevention of Equipment Damage: Fires in mining operations can cause significant damage to expensive and vital equipment such as excavators, trucks, conveyors, and processing plants. Fire suppression systems help detect and extinguish fires at an early stage, minimizing equipment damage and reducing costly downtime.
Protection of Personnel: The safety of miners is of utmost importance in any mining operation. Fire suppression systems can help contain and suppress fires, providing valuable time for personnel to evacuate safely. This is particularly critical in underground mining where escape routes can be limited.
Mitigation of Environmental Impact: Fires in mining areas can have detrimental effects on the environment. Toxic fumes, pollutants, and the release of hazardous substances can contaminate water sources and harm ecosystems. Fire suppression systems can help control and extinguish fires, reducing the environmental impact and protecting surrounding areas.
Compliance with Regulations: Mining operations are subject to strict safety regulations and codes. Installing fire suppression systems is often a legal requirement in many jurisdictions. By implementing these systems, mining companies can meet regulatory standards and ensure a safer working environment.
Early Detection and Rapid Response: Fire suppression systems are designed to detect fires at their early stages, allowing for immediate response and intervention. This early detection can significantly reduce the spread of the fire and minimize potential damage to equipment, infrastructure, and personnel.
Enhanced Firefighting Capabilities: Fire suppression systems in mining operations are often equipped with advanced technologies, such as automatic sprinklers, heat and smoke detectors, and specialized extinguishing agents. These systems can quickly activate and effectively combat fires, even in challenging mining environments.

Be it your washing machine, fridge, the bridge you cross on your daily commute, or the coffee maker in your favourite cafe, most of us regularly use items made from steel, often unaware that this material originates from iron ore.
Last week, I was lucky enough to tag along on a site visit to Mesa J, part of Rio Tinto's Robe Valley Operations. This trip was organised by Jessica Stallard, an accomplished Senior Engineer in our Process Engineering & Major Hazards division in Perth, who is also the mentor for Rio Tinto's Process Engineer and Metallurgical Graduate and Vacation Student programs.
After a 15-minute drive from Pannawonica, we were warmly welcomed by Mesa J Fixed Plant Superintendent Emma Williams, a devoted local with a passion for supporting Pannawonica Rodeo events (Every September, Pannawonica hosts the Robe River Rodeo. More information here: https://lnkd.in/gVV2BrUR)
Following our safety briefing, Emma extended an opportunity for us to stand atop the fixed plant to view the whole process.
The journey of iron ore commences at the mine pit, where it is extracted and subsequently channeled through the fixed plant. This intricate process encompasses pivotal stages, including crushing, scrubbing, screening, and thickening.
Witnessing this remarkable process, even in today's technologically advanced world, was mind-blowing.
A big thankyou to Jess and Emma, who answered the many questions we all had, displaying their real passion and dedication to providing insight into their roles.
