In the face of rising costs and the need for rapid innovation, businesses can benefit from taking a step back to rethink technology capabilities as an iterative process. After all, sustained intention should balance needs and costs rather than a treating as a one-off and all-in event. An "Operate to Transform" approach framed in this WSJ CIO Journal article by Deloitte leaders Michael Bundy, Afzal Sulaiman, and Sumeet Dey posits a focus on smart partnerships and thoughtful prioritization. As a particular callout, I am intrigued by the guidance offered around injections of next-generational talent. This can be an inhibitor for organizations with limited technical skillsets. Thinking through how to rebadge teams that have been traditionally called when something breaks to serve as organizational thought leaders and "transformation guides" is an aspiring suggestion as long as the motivation and opportunity match! As long as we measure the quality of governance by the elected leaders’ capacity to maintain our “same old, same old” state of affairs (#limitingbelief) this seems inevitable. This article is a great reminder of how much technology has become part of finance and the ever increasing interconnectedness between finance, strategy and data.
