The Great Indian Dad Odyssey: From Vedic Scholar to WhatsApp University Dropout As a kid in Mumbai, my dad was the human equivalent of the Vedas - an ancient repository of all knowledge. Whether it was about cricket statistics or the intricacies of making the perfect masala chai, Dad had the answer. "Papa, why is the sky blue?" "Beta, why does Amitabh Bachchan's voice sound like that?" "Dad, where do babies come from?" The last one always got a nervous laugh and a "Go ask your mother." But for everything else, Papa was my go-to guru. I remember asking him how trains worked. He launched into an explanation about steam engines and coal, leaving me more confused than a non-Mumbaikar in a local train during rush hour. As I grew older, cracks appeared in Papa's omniscient facade. It started small - him not knowing the latest Bollywood gossip or being baffled by my obsession with Pokemon cards. The real turning point came when I started preparing for IIT-JEE. Suddenly, I was learning things Papa had never heard of. His go-to phrase changed from "Well, actually..." to "Why don't you check on that Google thing?" Our roles reversed. Now I was explaining things to him, teaching him how to use his new smartphone or navigate Paytm. It was like watching Superman struggle with a dosa maker. But here's the thing: Papa's descent from all-knowing pandit to confused uncle made him human. I saw him for what he was - a regular guy trying his best in a rapidly changing India. And you know what? It was endearing. Watching Papa struggle with OTPs or figure out how to use emojis became a family spectacle. We'd gather around, samosas in hand, as he waged war against technology, muttering "Arre yaar!" under his breath. I started appreciating Papa's knowledge in a new way. He might not know how to book an Ola, but he knew other things. He knew how to negotiate with auto-wallahs, how to make the perfect gol gappa, how to navigate office politics. He knew the value of jugaad, the importance of family, and how to tell a joke so bad it was actually good. As I entered adulthood, I realized Papa's knowledge wasn't outdated - it was timeless. The lessons he taught weren't about facts, but about life in India and being a good person. And then, just as I was beginning to truly appreciate his wisdom, he was gone. Suddenly, all those times I'd rolled my eyes at his "WhatsApp wisdom" seemed trivial. Now, as I navigate fatherhood myself, I find Papa's voice echoing in my head. His laughter rings in my ears when I tell my kids a particularly groan-worthy "Santa-Banta" joke. So maybe Papa didn't know everything. But he knew the things that really mattered in our chaotic, colorful, incredible India. He knew how to be a dad.
