Around the world, dams are increasingly becoming essential energy generators to provide effective base load power during periods when solar and wind power simply isn't available. To effectively maintain these structures throughout their operational life (>100 years), it is essential to monitor them throughout this period which almost invariably is greater than their original design life. Using modern inspection techniques, innovative structural and geotechnical monitoring and asset management software that allows all relevant asset data to be easily integrated and interrogated is key to maintaining these strategic assets. #dammonitoring #SHM #UAVinspections #photogrammetry #lidar #nondestructivetesting #ndtinspection #wirelessmonitoring #iotsolutions #itwin #digitaltwins #AI #ML #augmentedreality #AR #wholelifestructuralmonitoring Bentley Infrastructure IoT

Nice to see hydropower in the news, although $38 million of new funding split between 66 facilities doesn't seem likely to make a world of difference. More interesting is the ambition outline in the Hydropower Vision Roadmap, which claims that the sector could grow by nearly 50% by 2050, from 101 GW today to 150 GW then.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reports that retrofitting existing hydropower dams could add as much as 12,000 megawatts of generation capacity to the grid. These retrofits represent billions of dollars of potential investment and thousands of jobs. DOE findings also include 50 gigawatts from upgrading existing hydropower facilities and retrofitting canals and conduits, as well as pumped storage hydro (noting that pumped storage currently provides more than 90 percent of total energy storage in the U.S.). "Even small hydropower projects at non-powered dams — 10, 15 megawatts or even less — can play a role in regulating the grid and making it more resilient."
Seeking some positive news about our clean energy future? This is an older article but an informative one about the benefits of retrofitting existing dams to harness hydropower. With more than a dozen projects in the pipeline, Rye Development is helping jumpstart a new era of low-impact hydropower development. https://lnkd.in/eaqwJSs #HydroPower #CleanEnergy #RenewableEnergy #EnergyStorage #PumpedStorageHydro #naturalresources
