An airplane uses 30-40% more fuel to take off than it does to cruise for the duration of its flight. The point here is that getting started requires more energy than actually doing something. So many times, we have goals we want to achieve, but we never achieve them because starting is difficult. It's hard to look at any endeavor and envision the outcome, and then assess the amount of work that goes into getting there without feeling doubt. But the best way to get started is to JUST DO 1. Exercise for 1 minute. Do 1 pull-up. Save 1 dollar. Do 1 task. The power of 1 is undervalued in American society today and the shame in that is that it takes 1 of ANYTHING to get started in the right direction. Instead, we look at 1 as a small insignificant number. But a 7-year-old can see the power of 1 when they add 1+1. Then 2+1. 3+1 and so on until the number of ones added together equals the achievement of a goal. So today, DIA challenges you to Just Do 1. Today, several Triangle Veterans had the honor of meeting with the team at Charlie Mike, a local non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of veterans grappling with unseen wounds of combat, one veteran at a time. Charlie Mike's mission resonates with the belief that standing together at home, just as they did during wartime, can facilitate each other's journey back to a fulfilling life. During our visit, we delved into one of Charlie Mike's cornerstone programs: the Canine Battle Buddy Training Program. Dogs have proven to be invaluable companions in addressing emotional needs, with documented outcomes showing that emotional support and therapy animals significantly contribute to emotional healing and stability. These benefits are directly linked to reduced suicide rates and the cultivation of a renewed sense of purpose in veterans' lives. The team at Charlie Mike identifies and rescues dogs from animal shelters, transforming them into "battle buddies" trained to support veterans. In this process, they are not only saving the lives of these animals but also offering vital support to veterans in need. This initiative is just one of the three pillars of support that Charlie Mike offers to veterans.
