On July 4th we celebrate the courage of those men and women who embraced the idea of freedom and indepedence and sacrificed much to earn it. It took over seven years from the time the Declaration of Independence was signed until the day the British surrendered, but those in the halls of Congress, and those who rallied behind such a powerful ideal didn't know how long the task would last. Today we are honored and inspired by those same "self- evident" truths to continue building a more perfect Union, no matter how long the task will take. During the month of May, we celebrate Asian/Pacific Islander American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island). Enacted on October 28, 1992, in the U.S. The purpose of the law is to honor the achievements of Asian/Pacific Americans and to recognize their contributions to the United States.
