As Siemens Healthineers innovates to cut the waste caused by point of care testing, health services must recognise that national adoption of the technology is vital if they are to achieve net zero. Bringing diagnosis from the hospital to the community cuts the road travel that “Delivering a ‘Net Zero’ National Health Service” estimates accounts for 14% of NHS emissions. It would help achieve three of the four approaches to reducing carbon emissions named in the report: bringing care closer to home, faster diagnosis and reduced interventions. https://bit.ly/47hIeOI

In 2023, Deaconess Health System Midtown Hospital, partnered with Evansville Packaging Supply, a local collection and sortation partner, advanced recycler Nexus Circular, and clinical product manufacturer Berry Global, Inc. to pilot a healthcare plastics recycling program to reduce incinerated and landfilled plastic wastes. The successes of their efforts serve as an important example to other healthcare facilities seeking to mitigate environmental impacts and make measured progress in plastic waste reduction. Each time I test negative with a COVID-19 rapid test, I have mixed feelings. 😊 I am relieved not to have to isolate myself for the next few days but 🥺 I feel guilty to throw away so much plastic in the non-recyclable bin.   The pandemic proved the importance of Point of Care Testing (POCT). But it also highlighted the industry's need for a sustainable product lifecycle. To create a more circular POCT value chain, some major challenges must be overcome: 1️⃣ diagnostic waste contain blood (or other body fluids) that must be incinerated 2️⃣ consumables are often made for a single use, therefore generating waste with every single test.    In a recent article (see link in comments), Nick Collier suggested some interesting ways to reduce the environment impact of in-vitro testing. The two strategies below are quite relevant for POCT:   🧪collect less blood to reduce the amount of incinerated hazardous waste   ♻️ improve recovery of device components (separation, disinfection and recycling of waste will become more and more feasible as less blood is used in devices).   Minimizing the impact of our products and processes on the planet 🌎requires to integrate Sustainability in every segment of the value chain: from R&D to Sales, from Procurement to Fleet Management, …   I am proud that #SiemensHealthineers is committed to preserving resources. I'm excited to share this case study which explains how Pure Strategies, Inc. recently supported MilliporeSigma in developing a circular plastic recycling solution, in partnership with Sterilis Solutions, that reduces the overall volume of virgin plastic derived from fossil fuels in the life science value chain. Pure Strategies completed a life cycle assessment and evaluated the environmental benefits and impacts of waste processed via the Remediator which turns biohazardous waste into non-hazardous, plastic shred that has the potential to be recycled — versus typical bio-hazardous waste treatment and disposal. The results from the LCA show that the Remediator demonstrates overall lower carbon emissions and dramatically reduced energy demand compared to typical biohazardous waste disposal. Pure Strategies also developed an environmental impact calculator tool for MilliporeSigma and Sterilis Solutions to share with their customers, enabling them to make more informed, data-driven decisions to reduce their own supply chain impacts.
