Today is it already exactly one month ago that the World Mail & Express Americas Conference started. #wmxamericas was a well-attended and organized event and it was great to see so many friends and colleagues there and discussing the future of our industry. It was also a huge honor to moderate the opening session. Being a consultant, and not anymore, a Postmaster, gives me the opportunity of being exposed, and involved, to a diverse set of industries. This gives me a much broader view and input when it comes to future outlook. During the opening session Brody Buhler from Escher Group gave an interesting presentation about “Rebooting perspectives and digital transformation” After the conference Brody shared his presentation with me and 2 slides attracted my attention, See the picture. First a quote from Peter Drucker “The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence; it is to act with yesterday’s logic.” Second a slide what the Postal operators think have the greatest impact on Post in the near future? A whopping 84% said e-commerce. Those 2 slides kept my attention because no doubt e-commerce will be an important subject but to me it's not that obvious e-commerce has the greatest impact. Coming out of the pandemic it was obvious that e-commerce and digital transformation where the dominant factors to focus on, but to quote Peter Drucker “Is that yesterday’s logic? The most important driver, by far, with the greatest future impact will be Technology innovation including A.I. Sadly this only scores a 20% or 6th place in Brody’s presentation. A.I. will be the catalyst for growth. It will, as is often mentioned, increase operational efficiency but also it will give you a tremendous Data Insight (Forecast, consumer behavior patterns, trends and disruptions, predictive behavior) all leading to a much more informed decision-making process. For a sustainable future and tech adoption you need to Hire new talent and even more important develop your current staff in order to truly embrace it. People and A.I. eventually will work together. Other focuses should be on building, as I call it, “smart partnerships. These are uncertain times and strong “smart” Partnerships will provide much needed support and resources allowing you to be ultra-flexible to adapt to a changing market or environment. To end specifically for the Postal industry, I think your relationship and cooperation with your regulator should be in the top 3 of greatest impact, I don’t see that on the slide at all. A continues dialogue and mutual understanding is the way forward. For example, eventual the regulator has to develop together with the Postal operator a USO which makes sense and is workable. Maybe less regulation in that field but as stated above in the field of A.I. and data protection there might be an opportunity to regulate.
