Heat waves are becoming more frequent, severe and longer in duration. This is a global risk, and we can expect this trend to continue. Extreme heat comes with expected consequences when it comes to health. But extreme heat has other cascading impacts, including power outages/power grid failures, event cancellations, decreased productivity, dangerous public transit, and airline delays. In my latest OnSolve blog I address the risk of heat waves and offer a quick guide for developing a heat plan this summer. #parisolympics #summer #climate https://lnkd.in/gtdGBcMY

The Climate Is Falling Apart. Prepare for the Push Alerts (and the Risk Fatigue) In our era of extreme weather, push alerts have become a part of daily lives in many areas. As climate change accelerates, these alerts are increasingly vital for our safety. Last year, while in Montreal, the author received a push alert about a marine tornado, prompting immediate action. However, as these alerts become more frequent, we risk "alert fatigue." When alerts are poorly crafted or overused, they lose their impact. Alerts must be clear, actionable, and appropriately targeted. Emergency management and communications should prioritize refining these systems. It’s about saving lives and ensuring that information cuts through the noise. Let's take every alert seriously, stay informed, and advocate for better alert systems. A push alert could make the difference in an emergency, without drowning in unnecessary or poorly targeted warnings. 🌍 Is Climate Change Impacting Your Daily Operations? As record-breaking heatwaves loom over the US, freight forwarders might face new challenges. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a hotter-than-average summer for much of the country. Extreme heat can disrupt logistics, affect outdoor workers, and strain infrastructure. In my 8 years living in Vancouver, last Winter was our warmest. Even in the mountains we had much less snow than previous years. So I am wondering if and how this will be affecting business ops for our community of freight forwarders? 🌡️ Key Points: - Heatwaves: Millions of Americans will endure dangerous heat, with temperatures spiking in states like Texas, Arizona, and Colorado. - Impact on Operations: Extreme heat can cause power outages, damage infrastructure, and increase health risks for outdoor workers. - Health Risks: With heat alerts affecting two-thirds of Americans last year, worker safety is paramount. States like Florida have rolled back protections for outdoor workers, increasing their vulnerability. 🚛 For Freight Forwarders: - Worker Safety: Ensure your teams have access to shade, water, and breaks. Consider flexible schedules to avoid peak heat hours. - Operational Resilience: Review and enhance your infrastructure to withstand extreme temperatures and related weather events. - Climate Adaptation: Stay informed about local weather forecasts and heat advisories to mitigate risks. 🔍 We Want to Hear From You! How is climate change affecting your operations? What steps are you taking to adapt? #ClimateChange #FreightForwarding #Heatwave #WorkerSafety #Logistics #SupplyChain

Can push notifications save lives? Great read from The Atlantic illustrating the increasing need for and value that push notifications bring consumers. In this case, for safety measures. Climate change will continue to pose risk for entire cities, communities and regions. This fact underscores just how crucial reliable communication channels are. When threats are imminent, it’s critical we have the means to reach people en masse, quickly and with the most pertinent and relevant information possible. https://lnkd.in/eQxuQyue

For those who are from Texas, they know how intense the heat can get during summer there. Due to climate change making triple digits a common occurrence, it's even more important to remember how dangerous the heat can be and how to deal with it. Professor Gregory Wellenius advises people to be well-prepared and have a plan to cope with extreme heat, something he calls "a personal cooling strategy." Headlines around the world are telling stories of extreme weather events that are causing evacuations and displacements. In the wake of these extreme events, it can take months or even years to rebuild infrastructure and return to normal. Businesses that have used their COVID forced work from anywhere experience to adopt this way of working permanently are better able to cope with these unfolding events. As I have said before, repeatedly, by becoming location-independent, a businesses can reduce its climate risk exposure and improve its resilience. If you're not already on the path to location-independence, now would be a very good time to start that journey in earnest. As we continue to heat these events are only going to escalate in frequency and intensity. Don't be caught off-guard when your turn comes! #ClimateLiteracy #ClimateCrisis #Adaptation #LocationIndependence

Are you prepared for the extreme heat this summer? 🔥 A new report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that much of the northern United States will experience hotter-than-average temperatures this summer. Heat waves are expected to be more intense due to climate change. This is a serious issue that can have a significant impact on our health and safety. Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are both dangers of extreme heat. Many states lack labor laws to protect outdoor workers from extreme heat. As the world grapples with escalating climate challenges, the recent extreme heat wave that gripped Pakistan, pushing temperatures to nearly 126°F (52°C), underscores the urgent need for comprehensive climate action. This heatwave, among the most severe recorded, has devastating impacts on public health, infrastructure, and ecosystems. #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Resilience #ClimateAction #PublicHealth https://lnkd.in/d5C66CqY
