This week I had the pleasure of presenting at CLOC (Corporate Legal Operations Consortium) with Darth Vaughn and Erik Johnson, about our one-year-later experiences as the first law department (Ford) and firm (Fisher Phillips) to deploy GenAI. We polled the audience (mostly filled with in-house legal operations counsel) several times during the discussion, and this was the most eye-opening one for me: Almost 80% of the respondents said they expected to insource more work as a result of GenAI! That said, I don’t think this will meaningfully affect law firms, and in fact anticipate the overall volume of work sent to law firms will nonetheless rise because (1) plaintiffs’ counsel will find it easier to file more lawsuits as a result of GenAI, and (2) there are increasingly more complex state laws and regulations passed / promulgated each year, which will require more outside legal assistance to comply with. But like everything else in the GenAI world, we shall see!
