I’ve been catching up on my podcasts lately - Raphael Roettgen, CFA's Space Business Podcast is always a good listen. In particular, the episode featuring Karan Kunjur from K2 Space Corporation, struck a chord. Karan's discussion about the future size and mass of #satellites amid declining #launch costs is nothing short of fascinating. A long-term perspective, we may soon see becoming a reality. 🤔 Rethinking Mass Trade-offs: As launch costs decrease, mass trade-offs are becoming less poignant, unlocking new possibilities in satellite system design. Think larger payloads and enhanced power availability, empowering us to design for even more demanding applications. 🛰 The Rise of Heavier Platforms: I believe we're seeing a change in paradigm, where larger platforms (>200kg) in both LEO and MEO are becoming commonplace. Why squeeze everything into a small package when you can have the freedom to optimize other aspects? Larger platforms offer a new horizon. 💭 Beyond Vertical Integration: Smaller isn't always superior. We might witness a future where non-vertically integrated players dominate lower orbits with bigger, more capable platforms. It's all about maximizing capability and minimizing NRE costs. Where do you envision satellite design for LEO and MEO heading? Listen to the interview here: https://lnkd.in/daDpakwF

I spend a fair amount of time thinking about how to "justify" fundamental science and space exploration to policymakers and other stakeholders. This is more than the ways of communication, it's about how we construct the essentially political arguments used to justify public expenditures. I often feel that rationalistic economic ways of thinking (impact assessments, cost-benefit evaluations etc.), while important for public accountability, seem to miss part of the bigger picture. I recommend listening to this excellent interview by Casey Dreier which covers this topic on the Space Policy edition of the Planetary Radio podcast! https://lnkd.in/dnZZ53dc The question is - how to capture / define better these "real" reasons...? 🤔 #spacepolicy #impact
