VAT fraud has been considered as risk free for a decade and, together with fraud in European funds, has grown into the biggest business of several organised crime groups. The greatest advantage of the EPPO from an operational point of view is that we act as a single Office inside of the EPPO zone. This is why, the EPPO is the right tool for decreasing the VAT and customs gaps in a lasting way and through our work we seriously affect criminal organizations’ ability to operate. Our strategy is to cripple the financial capacity of the organized crime groups. This case is just an example! More will follow!

Russian law enforcement seizes over 640 kg of cocaine in St. Petersburg, FSB says According to the security service, the cocaine was being smuggled into Russia for subsequent large-scale sales on a wholesale basis within the country Agents of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) interdicted a major channel for trafficking illicit drugs from Latin America to Russia, seizing over 640 kg of briquetted cocaine from smugglers, the press service of the FSB Branch for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region said in a statement. "[A consignment containing] more than 641 kg of a narcotic substance, cocaine, in the form of briquettes with a total estimated street value of over 2 bln rubles ($22.1 mln) was taken out of circulation as a result of operational and investigative actions carried out. The investigative service of the Russian FSB Branch for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region has initiated criminal proceedings in respect of this fact under Part 5, Article 228.1 of the Russian Criminal Code ("Illegal production, sale or forwarding of narcotic substances, psychotropic substances, or their analogues in a particularly large volume"), the press service said. According to the FSB, the cocaine was being smuggled into Russia for subsequent large-scale sales on a wholesale basis within the country. The suspected drug traffickers implicated in smuggling the consignment of cocaine were arrested and have been placed in detention. #business #finance #financialservices

Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 – How do the reforms to the Identification Doctrine play out in practice?

Last week, the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in Paris conducted searches and detained four individuals in western France over an estimated €60 million VAT fraud case. The suspects are accused of orchestrating a scheme to fraudulently claim VAT refunds by exporting goods from France to non-EU countries. They allegedly used fake documents and shell companies to carry out the fraud.
