Hong Kong: Hong Kong Customs steps up enforcement to combat illicit cigarette telephone-ordering activities and seizes suspected illicit cigarettes worth about $10 million "Hong Kong Customs mounted a territory-wide enforcement operation codenamed "Thunder" in the past three weeks to combat illicit cigarette telephone-ordering activities in public rental housing (PRH). The wrap up of 2023 Goods Compliance from the ABF raised some interesting areas of focus. Increased errors (particularly in customs valuation), supplier's incorrectly splitting shipments to access the low value threshold and a focus on gold. Is the current global trade supply chain enabling ilicit drugs into our country ? One suggestion in the report is to establish a joint task force to counter opioids that would focus on targeting the weaknesses in the global illicit fentanyl supply chain. The report also advises bolstering sanctions authorities and mobilizing trade and customs enforcement measures to restrict fentanyl trafficking, as well as closing regulatory and enforcement gaps.
