Earth Atmosphere Scientist - Satellite observation for air quality and climate - Operational processing Copernicus (EU) and EUMETSAT

Another eruption for the #Etna volcano! This leads to a high load of #ashes in the sky on Sunday 07.07.2024 that needs to be monitored for #airplane security! We have achieved this with #Copernicus #Sentinel3 and our Near Real Time #NRT operational system developed by EUMETSAT! At the same time, a large plume of Saharan dust has been blowing across the #Mediterranean basin! The mixture of both dust and ash particles results in a very high total concentration of #atmospheric #aerosols (also named #Aerosol Optical Depth or AOD). The computed map of total AOD mixes both dust and ashes. But we can still distinguish a bit the ash pattern on the right side of the thick dust plume. Beyond the direct benefits of such an operational information, this is a very exciting scientific case study for satellite remote sensing #scientists experts like us. Discriminating different #aerosol types within such a complex mixture is still challenging! #airquality #climate #airpollution #space Copernicus ECMWF
