On 6 & 7 March 2024, the European People's Party conference took place in the Romanian capital Bucharest. The entire #EPP party family came together. Of course the Konrad Adenauer Foundation was also represented. On the first day of the party conference, the EPP adopted a manifesto aimed at securing the "European way of life" in freedom, justice & democracy. The manifesto includes concrete proposals for a strong, competitive, and citizen-orientated Europe. Political proposals in the manifesto range from ramping up the defence industrial base, developing a European #Defence Union, an #EU foreign minister to the appointment of a European Security council. In the area of competitiveness, a strong emphasis is put on reducing regulatory burdens, supporting SMEs, developing energy infrastructure, diversifying the procurement of critical resources as well as on structural a cohesion policies in order to close the gap between rural & urban areas. EPP commits to a citizen-oriented Europe, underlining that the quality of life in Europe depends on social peace as well as on preserving democracy, tradition, cultural riches & diversity. On the second day of the EPP party conference Ursula von der Leyen was re-elected by a large majority as the EPP's lead candidate for the 2024 European elections. In her speech, Ursula von der Leyen was putting our a clear mission for the EPP campaign: “And let there be no doubt what’s at stake in this election. Our peaceful & united Europe is being challenged like never before by populists, nationalists, and demagogues. Whether it is the far right or the far left. Whether it is the AfD, the Rassemblement National, the confederatia or Wasraschdene. The names may be different, but the goal is the same: They want to trample on our values, and they want to destroy our #Europe. But we, the #EPP, will never let that happen.”

Charles Michel no longer interested in being EU Council President
Charles Michel has just announced that he will stand in the #election to the #europeanparliament, meaning he will be leaving the post of EU Council President. There are several implications of the motion - including a possibility of Victor Orban serving as a de facto President in the 2nd half of 2024 - but one thing seems clear. The job of #EU Council President - brought forward by the treaty of Lisbon - proves to be unattractive.
It speaks volumes that #Michel prefers to serve as a one of the 720 members of European Parliament rather than a single President of the entire #EUCouncil of 27 member states. Clearly the institutional reform of the Lisbon treaty was somehow lacking and the President's job - as splendid as it sounds - lacks real power and influence.
The EU has to reinvent itself asap or it will soon become irrelevant. We can't even build competitive cars anymore: Japan, Korea and now China are kicking our butts in an industry that Germany, France and Italy have excelled at for nearly a century. Not to mention other technology areas where we can't seem to be able to compete with the rest of the world: batteries & solar panels, internet platforms & software, space tech, etc...
The EU should “switch to a higher gear” to remain an “innovative, creative, capital-rich and productive continent”, said Belgium’s prime minister Alexander de Croo, marking the start of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU https://lnkd.in/ewKUDyRa

As Hungary takes the mantle of EU presidency from July, there has been a lot of speculation as to what this may mean for EU legislative decisions through the second half of 2024.
The direct impact of the presidency is limited, partly due to the incumbant EU parliament not effectively convening until later in 2024 which will limit the scope of new proposals.
Still, Hungary will seek to use its influence to spark debates ranging from the socio-economic consequences of the European Green Deal to broader longer term Balkan accession.
