...and for the next 6 months it's Belgium's turn at the helm of the #EU #council #presidency. What can be achieved amidst #permacrisis (the most overused word in 2023 in Brussels?) and what new #opportunities can spark some much needed awakening of #optimism? Will the #eugreendeal come back into the center of EUs socioeconomic agenda? Will the #eufarm2fork be rescued? Will there be an end to #malepanels? Will the partners and families of Belgian diplomats get #safeguarding and #family #policy that reflects commitments to #childprotection and #genderequality? Will the #EU propose a bold reform of the #unsecuritycouncil and the #un system? Will the #euelections2024 and #belgiumelections overshadow or become a suprising force for great policy outcomes? Wishing Belgium lots of ambition, strength and creativity in the upcoming 6 months.

💡 Let's start our morning with some quick insights from the kick-off event of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union which will take place in the first half of 2024. A detailed analysis will have to wait a few hours, since there is a lot to digest. 🇧🇪 ✅ "Deliver" "Deliver" was a word that Prime Minister Alexander De Croo used at least ten times in his speech this morning. It's clear that De Croo understands the current political & policy sentiment that the political level is often unable to deliver tangible results for citizens. Opinion polls clearly show that security, immigration and, above all, purchasing power are top of the list. De Croo looked serious, calm, without any theatre or rhetorical games. Delivering was his key message today, are we seeing the return of boring politics with results? 1️⃣ "Protecting our people" is one of the three priorities that Belgium will focus on during this presidency, which is broadly defined and ranges from the war in Ukraine to the social and economic protection of all Europeans. ⚔ 2️⃣ "Strengthening our economy" is another priority: As a small country, Belgium understands that the EU needs to focus on our economy and a deeper economic integration of our European markets in order to remain relevant in a time of shifting economic and geopolitical blocs. 💶 3️⃣ "Getting ready" "Gouverner, c'est prevoir" is a well-known adage in politics and it's one that Belgium will take into account. De Croo specifically referred to institutional reforms of the EU to prepare for the future: the world and its institutions are changing rapidly, the EU must follow suit. Coming from a country with a plethora of complicated governments, Belgium seems well prepared to take this issue forward. 🏛 👉 Now it's time to dive into the texts, analyse & reflect. 🇧🇪 🇪🇺 Today, the priorities of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU were officially presented by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib at the Residence Palace - International Press Centre (IPC)! 💪 From 1 January and for a period of six months, Belgium will play a central role on the international stage. During this Presidency, several summits and conferences will be hosted where important decisions on the future of the EU will be taken. #EU2024BE #EmbracingOpenness #Belgium

The EU has to reinvent itself asap or it will soon become irrelevant. We can't even build competitive cars anymore: Japan, Korea and now China are kicking our butts in an industry that Germany, France and Italy have excelled at for nearly a century. Not to mention other technology areas where we can't seem to be able to compete with the rest of the world: batteries & solar panels, internet platforms & software, space tech, etc...

For the next six months, the BE #presidency will be responsible for driving forward the work of the Council of the European Union on EU legislation (including open #energy files), ensuring the continuity of the EU agenda and cooperation among #EU member states. #EU2024BE #europe

In January 2024, the European Union (27 member states) changes its rotating presidency. Thus, the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU has started. One of its main #priorities for this semester is the defence of the #ruleoflaw and #democracy. Considering that the protection of the rule of law and democracy, along with human rights, are the three pillars of the work of the Council of Europe (46 member states), it will be very interesting to see whether this priority will lead to even greater collaboration between the two European political organisations. At the same time, it should be noted that Liechtenstein holds the rotating presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, its governing body. Liechtenstein, which is not a member of the European Union, also has among its priorities for the Council "strengthening the fundamental #values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law" (see the link: https://lnkd.in/eZAFQQTC). All in all, the first part of 2024 looks very interesting.
