Throughout the Active Cities project, cities across the North Sea Region will carry out various pilot activities with the shared aim of shifting their urban zones from car-centric to human-focused areas. Active mobility encourages people to reduce their reliance on cars, adopting walking and cycling as a regular transport option. The Active Cities pilots are exploring different ways to boost active mobility in the region, and only with the help of locals can the activities truly put people back at the heart of urban planning. The key to running impactful and efficient pilots is ensuring citizens are actively involved in the process. We caught up with 3 of our Active Cities to check how the pilots are going so far and discuss the importance of involving citizens throughout the pilot activites. In the article we hear how: 🚸 Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg is addressing urban spatial challenges and promoting sustainable mobility in and around its schools. 🚲 City of Aarhus is implementing a new mobility hub concept to encourage commuters to choose active transport modes over cars. 🛣 Bergen kommune is involving local residents to boost numbers using the Fyllingsdalen Tunnel, a dedicated cycle and pedestrian tunnel servicing the city. Thanks to our cities for the invaluable insights! Stay tuned as we continue to document the development of the pilots and hear the other ways our Active Cities are involving local citizens. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dPAaKXtF

As we have reached the midpoint of 2024, it's clear that the adoption of NIU mopeds is significantly transforming urban mobility across Europe. Our data, collected from our connected NIU Crew, shows impressive growth in usage across several countries. This growth highlights a collective movement towards cleaner, quieter, and more efficient urban transportation. Here’s how different countries are contributing to this revolution: 🇩🇪 Germany: From 51.56 million km in 2023 to 68.43 million km in 2024. 🇳🇱 Netherlands: From 46.09 million km in 2023 to 59.14 million km in 2024. 🇮🇹 Italy: From 38.94 million km in 2023 to 53.00 million km in 2024. 🇫🇷 France: From 27.25 million km in 2023 to 36.04 million km in 2024. 🇪🇸 Spain: From 23.79 million km in 2023 to 30.43 million km in 2024. Each kilometer traveled by our NIU Crew means less air pollution, less noise pollution, and less space is taken up by cars in our beautiful European cities. By choosing NIU mopeds, we are making our urban spaces cleaner, quieter, and more enjoyable for everyone. 🥇Helsinki, Amsterdam, and Stockholm have been acknowledged as leading cities in urban transportation and recognised as key players in the future of urban mobility. 🚲 According to a study by the Oliver Wyman Forum and University of California, Berkeley, these cities stand out for their robust public transit systems, significant investments in cycling infrastructure, and a commitment to transitioning to sustainable energy sources. 🌟 Cities were given credit for car-free zones and extensive cycling networks, with European cities like Amsterdam leading the way. The density of public transit stations, extensiveness of transport networks and the quality of roads were also taken into account. 🚶One primary focus of the study was to debunk the myth that a city’s transportation landscape is permanent. Cities that consistently invest in transformation have become more efficient and increased their residents’ ease of movement and quality of life. 🔗Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eFn9Fx_Z #AmsterdamRanking #Mobility #UrbanMovement

🤔 The 15-minute city has been at the centre of a lot of controversy and misinformation recently, so what is it really? It’s a planning concept that helps citizens access important services in under 15 minutes by walking, cycling, and in some cases, public transport. No, this doesn’t mean governments are taking away cars or forcing you to stay in your 15-minute zone. It is simply to promote active mobility and decrease our reliance on cars! 🏡 You can learn more about the 15-minute city concept and how it is already being implemented in many cities around the world in our course with EIT Urban Mobility called “±15-Minute Cities: Putting People’s Needs First” which we created with Benjamin Büttner from Technical University of Munich. Like all our EIT courses it’s completely free! 🔗 ±15-Minute Cities: Putting People’s Needs First https://lnkd.in/e_xBrEzd #15minutecities #urbanmobility #sustainablecities #onlinelearning #eLearning #freecourse

📢Let's talk about sustainable urban mobility! 🚗 Effective parking management is a critical issue in European cities. However, it remains one of the most underdeveloped parts of Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP). With the Park4SUMP project, we're proud to have taken a significant step forward in addressing this challenge. 🅿️ The project aimed to help cities integrate innovative parking management solutions into Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), placing parking management at the heart of a wider strategy to improve urban mobility and overall quality of life in European cities. What we did: 🔍Analysis of innovative parking policies. 📈Involving stakeholders and social collectives in the analysis of innovative parking policies. 📚Producing innovation sheets on the main innovative parking policies. 🌐Use a series of innovation sessions to provide an in-depth look at the key barriers and enablers to the implementation of innovative parking policies. By embracing innovation and incorporating effective parking management into SUMPs, we had the opportunity to create more sustainable and liveable cities for all. 🤝We worked with: Mobiel 21, Deutsches Institut für Urbanistik, Austrian Mobility Research, Edinburgh Napier University, Polis, Vitoria-Gasteiz Environmental Studies Centre, City of Rotterdam, City of Freiburg, City of Krakow, The Municipality of Trondheim, City of Sint-Niklaas, Municipality of Slatina, Sofia Municipality – Urban Mobility Centre, City of Tallinn, City of Zadar, Municipality of Shkoder, Lisboa E-Nova – Energy and Environment Agency of Lisbon, City of Gdansk, City of La Rochelle, City of Reggio Emilia, Umeå Parking. Together, let's unlock the true potential of parking management in shaping the future of our cities. ➡️ https://rebrand.ly/awksuet #Park4SUMP #SustainableUrbanMobility #InnovationAction #Horizon2020 #innovation #sustainability #ISINNOVAprojects #efficiency #research #development #ISINNOVA #EUfunds

🌟 We are thrilled to share that our colleague Pieter Faber recently participated in a compelling round table discussion at the Cerema #EuropeanUrbanMobilityDays in Strasbourg! The session focused on the timely topic: “Is the city of proximity a long way off?”, exploring the innovative 15-minute city concept. 🚴♂️ Pieter highlighted the forward-thinking initiatives of our four cities—Leeuwarden, Groningen, Assen, and Emmen. He emphasized Groningen's dedication to remaining a 15-minute city. While the Netherlands excels in urban planning, this success sometimes brings unique challenges, such as cyclist traffic jams and public spaces being crowded with parked bikes. 🏙️ Groningen is tackling these challenges head-on by implementing underground bike parking, which frees up more green spaces, and by using mobility data management systems traditionally reserved for cars to optimize and reroute cyclist routes. These efforts ensure high urban mobility and a superior quality of life. 📈 Pieter also mentioned several significant projects supporting this mission: - ULaaDS: Urban logistics solutions enhancing delivery efficiency. - SURFLOGH: Sustainable urban freight logistics to minimize environmental impact. - Coding the Curbs: Smart curb management optimizing space use. 🌱 We are proud of the strides being made towards smarter, more sustainable urban living and are excited to continue this journey with our dedicated teams and visionary projects.
