Turkish Airlines’ arrival means Melbourne Airport is now served by a record 39 international carriers. Istanbul and Melbourne will initially operate three times a week via Singapore, with the airline planning to fly non-stop upon the arrival of new long-range aircraft. The inaugural flight was flown by a Boeing 777, with Boeing 787 Dreamliners and the flagship Airbus A350 aircraft to take over the service later this month. Recently, the capacity reduction in flights to China by foreign carriers has become a general trend. Besides the fact that a full recovery has not yet been achieved post-COVID-19, the closure of Russian airspace is another factor negatively impacting the process. Additionally, China's current economic contraction and geopolitical risks are among the developments that need to be monitored in the market. A market that once experienced competition for flight rights and where some carriers missed opportunities is now known for its contraction. As of mid-2024, China's international flight capacity is operating at about 70-75% of the 2019 levels. Key markets such as South Korea, Japan, and Thailand have seen varied rates of recovery, with capacities reaching 75%, 80%, and 70% of their 2019 levels respectively. The USA-China market, however, is significantly lagging, operating at just 25% of its pre-pandemic capacity due to regulatory constraints rather than a lack of demand.
