New book: ‘European Muslims and the Qur’an: Practices of Translation, Interpretation, and Commodification.’ Editors: Gulnaz Sibgatullina and Gerard Wiegers (both affiliated with the University of Amsterdam) Publisher: De Gruyter ISBN: 9783111140797 This new book, entitled ‘European Muslims and the Qur’an: Practices of Translation, Interpretation, and Commodification’ is a result of the research of the UvA team within the ERC Synergy project “The European Qur’an” (https://euqu.eu/]). The book contains ten contributions covering different regions and periods and shows how Muslims in Europe (including the Iberian Peninsula, but also areas in the European part of Russia, and Eastern and Southern European countries such as Poland and Bosnia) between the 15th and early 20th century translated and interpreted the Koran into Arabic, Turkish and the various other written languages of the European continent. It sheds light on the relationships between the groups, forms of cooperation, but also on the barriers, and on the agency of individual European Muslims. #islamstudies #newbook #europeanislam #translation #interpretation #commodification

Retired ex-subject Leader MFL Department at St. Ninian's High School. English teacher at Café Lingo, IOM. Translator of La Vita Rustica/ A Country Boy at the Core by D. Raccanelli. Keen linguist, walker, shower singer!
Are you interested in bilingual editions in Italian and English? Published in June 2023, the translation of Dino Raccanelli’s 5th novel, A Country Boy at the Core/ La Vita Rustica is available in the form of a bilingual edition translated by myself…. Handy format to learn a few words of Italian as you turn the pages! E. Lui Editore ISBN:978-88-99339-72-2 In brief it follows the story of a post-war Italian boy growing up in Northern Italy in a poverty-stricken but highly ingenious family, who leaves his own village first to go to school as a boarder and then to work as a teacher until he is appointed back on home turf. It’s a tale of resilience and aspiration. You’ll grow really fond of all the characters. Full of humour and astute remarks! But mostly, Dino Raccanelli, the author has agreed that for every copy sold in the UK, £3.00 will go to Alzheimer’s Research UK. In other words, the novel is a type of memoir to aid research into memory loss. Contact me if you would like to purchase a copy. Price without postage: £17.50 in the UK. €20.00 in Europe. Also available at #onchanlibrary #henrybloomnoblelibrary #ramseytownlibrary #mothertslaxey #bilingualedition #italianenglish #ingleseitaliano #eluieditore

Pedro Caroline is not the person you want to guide you through the intricacies of the Portuguese language! This hilarious 19th century example of a phrase book is a reminder of why relying on a Portuguese speaker to help you through the maze of visas and forms is a really good idea. We can help you avoid stating ‘to fatten the foot’ and other bizarre sayings, however if you want to be entertained we highly recommend this unique phrase book! #PortugueseLanguage #portuguesephrasebook #portuguesephrases #welcometoportugal #liveinportugal #movetoportugal #expatsportugal

Former 1 ST Father of the District of Columbia. Recording Artist, songwriter, musician, author, inventor.
IN JAMAICA TODAY There are three different ways to communicate for example: we have 2 languages and a dialect So let me break it down to you gently. EXAMPLE: How do you say: (I am going to Jamaica) in both Jamaican and patois? 1. English: I am going to Jamaica 2. Jamaican: Mih agaw Jamaica 3. Patois: Mi a guh a Jamaica Above you can see clearly the clear differences between Jamaican, English and Patois. 500 years ago the British had no idea that time would catch upon them, when they used a French word patois to describe what we speak. They had no idea that God/ JAH would send one “little but wih Tallawah” man to bring to light the truth about what and who we are. We are Jamaicans and what we speak on our Island is Jamaican, English and patois a French word meaning dialect. “Speak & Write Jamaican” is the only book that teaches you Jamaican, English and patois all in one book. This book is so great it’s available at all major and minor online bookstores. Watch the FREE introductory video lessons online @ our website speakandwritejamaican.com Praise JAH
