Still going strong ! Today the Global Innovation Index of the World Intellectual Property Organization was published. This compares the innovation capacity of countries and regions around the world. Eindhoven ranks 4th worldwide when it comes to top clusters of science and technology development per capita (just below Cambridge, San Jose-San Francisco and Oxford). What happened to all of science's great breakthroughs? Nothing! I'm excited to share a great paper from my colleagues at CIEB Universität Basel, Christian Rutzer and Rolf Weder, which offers important insights into the innovation landscape. Contrary to the stark decline in disruptive patents reported by Park et al. (2023) – a study that sparked widespread discussion – their research presents a more nuanced view. By adjusting for truncation in backward citations and including patent applications in their analysis, Rutzer and Weder reveal that the decrease in innovation disruptiveness over the past three decades is, in fact, only marginal. Furthermore, their findings highlight an encouraging trend: the number of highly disruptive patents is actually increasing. (https://lnkd.in/dSe3RjRA) - it turns out, the breakthroughs are still there; we just needed to refine our lens to see them clearly.

The panellists discussed: ♦ The underutilisation of the R&I ecosystem within the EU (zooming in on the EU's #GERD, unequal distribution of innovation capacities, and the EU lagging behind competitors such as the US and China) ♦ Cross-country collaborations and freedom within innovation ecosystems ♦ The importance of curiosity-driven and applied research ♦ Knowledge valorisation capacity of universities Svein Stølen, Rector of the University of Oslo and Chair of The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, noted the need to create ecosystems which develop on their own but not in isolation, where all actors (academia, industry, research & innovation organisations) come together, supported by EU policies. 💡 Systemic Design in SMEs open innovation processes 🤝🏻 To facilitate European enterprises’ ecological and digital transition, a systemic and collaborative approach is required, framing issues within the complexity of the relationships and interconnections that characterize them. 📝 The paper, written by Silvia Barbero and Eliana Ferrulli, aims to investigate how the approach and methods of Systemic Design support an “open innovation” process in industrial and interdisciplinary environments. ♻️ The DigiCirc European project represents the reference case study, offering a space to test the challenges found in the literature with data collected in the field, emphasizing the contribution made by the researchers in Systemic Design of the Politecnico di Torino, both as project partners in the “open innovation” process and through activities supporting the start-ups and SMEs involved. 🌐 Read the whole article at this link: https://lnkd.in/eD73CsCp #systemicdesign #circulareconomy

Thanks Fernando Vargas for sharing our recent paper. Mauricio Canedo Pinheiro, Bernardo Cabral, and I are extremely grateful for all the support from the Inter-American Development Bank. Growth challenges are present in many fronts for developing countries, including Latin American (LA) ones, but innovation is a crucial catalyst for sustainable economic growth. Our contribution is just a step forward to promote more innovation in LA. Policy and knowledge should keep moving hand-to-hand for inclusive development.

In light of the European Research and Innovation Days, I have co-authored two publications. The publications are key results of a comprehensive co-creation exercise with several colleagues of EU Science, Research and Innovation. They provide a rationale on why investing in research and innovation matters for Europe to strengthen EU's competitiveness, support a green and sustainable future, and build a fair European society. The Swiss National Science Foundation invested CHF 961 million in over 5,000 research projects in 2023, which demonstrates Switzerland's commitment to scientific excellence. However, some brilliant ideas are left unexplored due to financial limitations.
