The ‘Eye of Québec’ For those interested in reservoirs, the Manicouagan Reservoir (Manikuakan in the Innu language) in Québec is a unique example. The evolution of this reservoir combines Pleistocene-era geomorphology, hydrology, geological/seismic uplifting, along with contemporary operational water development, riverine management, and energy production. The Manicouagan impact crater, or impact structure, has been the focus of numerous geological investigations over the past five decades and yet the reservoir and the flooded lakes have received little comparable attention from the scientific community. The drowned lake is a 60-km long arc-shaped basin lying within the Manicouagan impact crater. It has been called the ‘Eye of Québec’ for its ringed shape situated within circular troughs inherited from the meteor impact. One of the deepest lakes in North America, the Manicouagan Reservoir reaches a natural depth >320 m prior to impoundment (e.g., >100 m below modern sea level).     The swath bathymetry revealed subaqueous landforms attributable to terrestrial inputs (e.g., sediment waves on drowned deltas, submerged ravines, deep lateral channels, subaqueous fans), slope features (e.g., gullies, slide scars, compression ridges), and water-level changes (terraces).  In fact, the morphosedimentary record of Lake Manicouagan currently has no equivalent in regional fjord-lake surveys. The Late Quaternary history indicate a three-stage evolution consisting of deglacial, paraglacial/postglacial, and anthropogenic effects, the latter following the construction of the Manic-5 dam and the filling of the associated reservoir by ~140 m of water during the 1960s. Geology is three-dimensional, so it should also be the way to learn it. Last week I traveled to Vienna to join the live presentation of #VisibleGeology at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2024. Some months ago, I saw the preview of #VisibleGeology and have been immediately envious not having that kind of tool “last century” when I took my first Geology class at university. It is absolutely fascinating to understand how our earth was formed over the last thousand or even millions of years. Considering the development of formations the full understanding of Geology is a 4D challenge. I was thrilled to meet my colleagues Rachel Murtagh and Holly Chapman for an in-depth insight into the amazing features of the final release coming most probably in some weeks. My personal highlight feature is the possibility to change the topology or the chronological order of events and seeing immediately the effect in the model. Geology is fascinating and important to manage our way into a sustainable and resilient future. Demographic effects and an increasing demand for skilled geoscience talents requires an increasing focus to inspire people to learn more about our earth. A full understanding of the subsurface conditions and interdependencies with build infrastructure is still complex. Learning the fundamental concepts of Geology, a main element of subsurface understanding, is way more easy, intuitive and fun having #VisibleGeology now. We have a common understanding of the upcoming infrastructure challenges and we have IT solutions available to address them.
