This morning Carmen Boon, M.A. was our first guest speaker this semester in my "Public Relations: Principles and Practices" class at New York University. Carmen is the Vice President of Public Affairs at the Food Bank For New York City, an incredible organization working to end food poverty in our five boroughs. Beyond the empowering and impactful case studies she shared, Carmen left us with four helpful tips: 1. Be timely 2. Capitalize on human interest stories 3. Show impact 4. “We have to be coordinated and share a unified story about what our values are, who is violating those values, and what we can do about it across race and place.” As part of our Communications Institute curriculum, our cohort met with Anika Fassia from We Make The Future & We Make the Future Action to learn about her work in narrative strategy and alignment! 🌱 Anika emphasized the importance of shifting the messages that our communities are hearing so that the seeds of our movement can take root. 💬 While the opposition breeds fear and economic resentment, we must center narratives that can unleash our base. By naming race and class, we can inoculate our communities from the division the opposition tries to sow. 🔊 Anika shared insights from the Texas for All coalition and their narrative alignment strategy across partner organizations in the state. Texans are urged to know their worth as the Race Class Narrative moves a multiracial constituency toward a democracy that works for everyone! This narrative work is so important, and we appreciate Anika and the We Make The Future & We Make the Future Action team for driving this charge! If you fail to communicate with your staff, you’re probably failing to communicate with your donors. If your staff struggle to trust what they are hearing from your organization, your donors are not far behind. Public relations means little if there’s chaos happening internally. Am I off base here?
