But above all we say: the time of life, the time which counts, isn't only the time you believe useful because it's 'productive'/producing. Time isn't only time under constraint, isn't only useful to society as the time spent working - it's also free time. And free time is not a time that is inactive but time that is left up to ourselves, where we ourselves decide what we'll do; that means living in a human, social way, to do not what others have decided but what WE have decided to do. To live, to love, to do nothing if we like. Time to tend to our loved ones, time to read poetry, to do painting, to sing, or do nothing. Supervision between thought and action Supervision inhabits the charged space between major issues (values, attitude, power, transformation, democracy, diversity, etc.) and practical tools of the trade (clarification of the assignment, working relationship, communication, intervention, contract, fees). As supervisors,we think about the world, society, organisations, roles and people. At the same time, we engage in exceedingly practical activity in our attempts to develop and implement useful interventions for our supervisees and clients. Between thinking and acting truly lies an ocean. At the ANSE Summer University 2025, we intend to explore the shores of this ocean and dive into its depths. * From the shore of thought... What social, political, fundamental questions are we supervisors concerned with when lookingat the world, Europe and the various countries? What concerns us? Of this, what is important for our profession? * ...across the ocean... How does all this affect our inner work as supervisors? How do we manage the complexity?Where do we navigate safely on the high seas and where are there cliffs or shoals? Where do we feel competent and powerful? Where do we feel overwhelmed and powerless? *...to the shore of action. How does the big picture ultimately reveal itself in the concrete details? Which questions do Iask and which do I not? Which interventions, which working methods (still) work and which don‘t (any longer)? How is the practice changing and in which ways should it remain the same? We invite participants to reflect on this together and to experience practical handholds – with thoughts and actions. This week, meet Katalin Gebl, Master´s student in German Studies at Justus Liebig University Giessen and one of the student assistants at the GCSC, working with our Publications Coordinator Isabella Kalte. 📖 “Hello, my name is Katalin and I am a Master's student in #GermanStudies with a focus on #GermanLiterature and #linguistics and recently submitted my thesis, in which I dealt with #IdentityPolitics. I was particularly interested in how #culture and #identity are connected - at the same time, I investigated how the different #perspectives influence each other, how they divide society and what consequences these dynamics can have for #TheFuture. 💡 💼 In addition to my studies, I work as a #StudentAssistant at the GCSC. My main focus here is on supporting the #publications of our #OpenAccess journal #OnCulture, which is published twice a year. Here I accompany the publication process, starting with various #EditorialTasks for all contributions to the actual publication of a new issue and its promotion on various platforms. HE NEARLY SUBMITTED A PERSONAL STATEMENT AS A STATEMENT OF PURPOSE A man who was applying for admission at a European school for the first time had written a personal statement and almost submitted it but decided to show it to show it to a third party, that was how his application got saved.  It is easy to mix up the two when you are not properly informed especially because both are quite similar. Below are key points to help in understanding the two statements 1. A personal statement is like a memoir of the applicant. The Key focus of a personal statement is for the you as the applicant to “sell” yourself. In this statement, you must convince the school that you are the best candidate for the programme being applied for.  To achieve this, the statement must be genuine, precise and reflective. It must highlight areas such as academic achievements, personal inspirational experiences and events that have shaped you and your view on life. 2. A statement purpose is a declaration of intent. It explains the why you are applying for the program of choice. The focus here is futuristic. This statement must highlight your goals, interests, qualifications for the chosen program and future contributions/ plans you have as regards your field. The two statements are important and go hand in hand. However, it is important to not mix them up as they serve different purposes. I was lucky enough yesterday to deliver a lecture at Glasgow University - thanks to Marion Anderson and Matthew Leeper, PhD for the opportunity. Did my younger self ever imagine the older Donald giving a lecture at such a prestigious university? Never in a gazillion years. Don't get me wrong, I am not getting ahead of myself. I have only done two lectures and I am no Jean Brodie or Mark Thackeray. I am sure my presentation was unpolished and maybe not the most expertly delivered - but I tried to fill it with practical advice, which hopefully was useful. I didn't go to university myself, and I have no regrets in not doing so (well, maybe just a little). This was school exam results week, and while I think it is a great thing to go to university, it is not the bee all and end all. You can have a successful career without a degree. Quad Erat Demonstrandum. I hire people based on the following three criteria (thanks to Brian Hunter for this) Humble - Yes this country has a lot of problems, but we are lucky to be born in this time and place. We have clean water, food and opportunity and don't have to deal with crappy things like war, oppression, human rights abuses, etc. We should be genuinely grateful for this, rather than thinking the world owes us a living. I follow Alan Broome on Linkedin and he puts it more succinctly - "Don't be a dick" Hungry - the desire and drive to achieve. In work, it is not about being first in the office or last to leave. It is about doing things to the best of your ability, consistently - even if it is mundane or boring tasks. Striving to be the best, not because of the reward, but because you believe it is the right thing to do. Smart - There is a saying that you should hire people smarter than yourself. If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room. This isn't just being academically smart, but having common sense (I once sent a trainee to the shop Staples, to but erm.. staples and they came back with a jam doughnut) and also emotional intelligence - the ability to understand how other people are feeling or how to read the room and react accordingly. So this week if your exam results weren't as good as you hoped, don't worry, if you have the above characteristics, then you will go far.

#MyDocumentaryOnSSETS It's been 8 weeks of intensive and impactful training and I share with you all I achieved these past weeks. 1. I activated my LinkedIn account which has been dormant for a long time and improved on my connections. 2. On a weekly basis, I have updated this space with my activities #MyBeforeAndAfterWithSSETS. 3. I connected with academics from other disciplines and other countries which has helped me grow my network and position me for multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving ideologies. 4. I invited an industry guest lecturer during one of my classes for my students, to enhance their employability and try to bridge the gap between classroom and industry #ImpactingMyStudentsOnSSET, it was really educative. 5. My passion for #GirlChildEducation and #GenderEquality got a boost during this program because I am better equipped on how to seek and get funding in this regard. We were asked to state and grow a passion or community project within or outside our core discipline. 6. I formed a 5-member money crew #MyMoneyCrewOnSSETS with academics from other disciplines and we developed a multidisciplinary #ConceptNote on #GenderEquality in line with UN SDG 5. 7. I prepared a #MoneyExcelSpreadSheet of top 10 #InternationalFunders in my research area, which I intend to monitor to keep me updated on funding calls. 8. I connected with a Professor in China whom I have used and referenced his works, for partnership and collaboration for future works. He responded positively to my email. 9. I prepared a #TrainingBrief on #AddressingChallengesOfSolidWasteManagement and I presented a one day professional training to a group of people #TrainingForImpactOnSSETS. In all, there are so many things to talk because the program was resourceful, but let me stop here for now. I will continually improve on my current status bearing in mind that those 8 weeks of intensive training has transformed me completely towards being an #EntrepreneurialAcademic. How can I forget to say that I was among the list of top 10 participants for week 5 and 6? It was the best moment of the program. My special appreciation to Dr. Akanimo Odon and Dr Viola Akhigbe for coaching me well, and to my University lead Chike Anibeze for assistance always. I am happy to be "at least" online at this year's International Virtual Exchange Conference (IVEC) in Sao Paolo (30 Oct.-1 Nov.). With great colleagues under the hybrid moderation of Eithne Knappitsch and Dr. Barbara Covarrubias Venegas there will be an interesting panel discussion on "Virtual Exchange, Global Impact: The Future of Responsible Internationalization at HEIs" to which I am invited. I will be able to contribute my perspective as a computer scientist, but also the nexus digitalization - sustainability - mental health, and discuss with other interested parties the opportunities and risks of virtual exchange, what we still have to do to be anchored in the digital world as universities, and what will be possible in the future. The possibility of participation for all people is a major topic, as is the impact of the digital transformation on social exchange with people all over the world. Digitization is not the holy grail, it costs money, requires huge amounts of energy and is often demonized but used correctly, powered by sustainable green energy it can be a great opportunity for all of us and the planet, we just have to seize it and offer our fellow human beings/students opportunities to be part of it so they can see how great virtual exchange & learning can be.
