Reducing food-borne disease in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is crucial for advancing nutrition, health, and other development goals. The USAID Feed the Future’s Evidence and Action Towards Safe, Nutritious Food (EatSafe) program sought to harness consumer demand as a mechanism to improve food safety practices and generate evidence on how to raise consumer demand for safe, nutritious foods in traditional market settings, the main source of food for most LMIC consumers. EatSafe in Nigeria tested four community interventions, including an in-market Safe Food Stand that provided consumers with food safety information, demonstrations, and trainings in the markets where they shopped. Our new working paper reports on the results of an implementation research study that sought to understand how Stand staff and visitors perceived the intervention, drawing lessons for future similar approaches. "Dr. Juliana Kiio's, Lecturer, Food Nutrition and Dietetics Department, Kenyatta University enlightening talk at the HealthyDiets4Africa (HD4A) Living Lab Launch at KALRO Kabete emphasized the critical role of food safety from farm to fork. She stressed the importance of knowledge and training in minimizing food contamination. She highlighted that food can be at risk of contamination at various stages, including during transportation, household preparation, and even acquired through the use of contaminated materials/ingredients during processing. Additionally, the increase in food residues is on rise often due to a lack of awareness, improper adherence to guidelines on farm, or insufficient sensitization. To address these challenges, the #HD4ALivingLab offers a platform and opportunity for real-time mapping, research, and food safety analyses. This initiative aims to promote behavior change and provide guidance on recipes to encourage the adoption of traditional African diets in the midst of digital transitions. As consortium partners Kenyatta University will will working with FSPN Africa to ensure we promote and ensure safer and healthier food practices for all." #FSPNAfrica #PartnersAgainstHunger #HealthyDiets4Africa #TheShambaCalendar #YourFarmersGuardian #DigitalAgricultureAfrica #DigitizingSupplyChains

❗ Important Update on Food Safety Regulations ❗ ⚠️The Commission Implementing Regulation 2023/2782, which establishes methods for sampling and analyzing mycotoxins in food, is now in effect as of April 1, 2024.⚠️ 🔍Key highlights include: 🔸 New Maximum Levels for T-2/HT-2 Toxins: To better protect consumers, the regulation introduces stricter limits on T-2 and HT-2 toxins in various food products. These mycotoxins, produced by Fusarium fungi, are harmful contaminants that can impact food safety and public health. 🌾🛡️ 🔸 Updated Maximum Levels for Deoxynivalenol (DON): The regulation also updates the permissible levels of Deoxynivalenol, commonly known as DON or vomitoxin, in food. Deoxynivalenol, another mycotoxin from Fusarium species, can cause adverse health effects, and the revised limits aim to further reduce exposure. 🍞⚠️ ✅These changes are part of ongoing efforts to enhance food safety and ensure consumer protection. 🥗 This update is particularly relevant for food industry professionals, regulatory bodies, quality control experts, and public health advocates. 🏢👩🔬👨⚕️ Staying informed and ensuring compliance with these updated regulations is crucial for all stakeholders in the food industry. 📋❗ #FoodSafety #Regulations #Mycotoxins #Compliance #PublicHealth #FoodIndustry #ConsumerProtection

On this World Food Safety Day, we at Institut AllergoSan aim to raise awareness for the crucial importance of ensuring food safety worldwide ❗ Did you know that according to the World Health Organization, unsafe food is responsible for an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne diseases annually, affecting almost 1 in 10 people globally? To prevent such occurrences, we are dedicated to developing probiotic products that exceed industry standards in quality, safety, and evidence-based clinical research 🔬 🦠 All bacterial strains used for OMNi-BiOTiC® products must have GRAS status, QPS status or comparable safety standards, which indicate the highest safety standard for human ingestion and the absence of side effects, especially long-term. 🦠 Furthermore, Institut AllergoSan is a worldwide known competence & research center for microbiome science with 30 years of experience. With more than 60 research partners and 30 research fields we have conducted over 100 research studies and over 40 ongoing studies underscoring the quality and safety of our products. “The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recently derived a tolerable daily intake (TDI) for bisphenol A (BPA) of 0.2 ng/kg bw/day. There are several issues with EFSA’s hazard assessment review process, including that it was based on a limited subset of relevant studies. Multiple public commenters on EFSA’s draft evaluation of BPA, including several European regulatory agencies, noted these issues, yet they were not adequately addressed by EFSA in the final evaluation. The TDI for BPA was based on an intermediate immunotoxicity endpoint in mice that has not been observed in other species; there is no evidence that it is a precursor event to any downstream pathological outcome. The TDI is several orders of magnitude lower than estimates of safe doses of BPA established by agencies worldwide, including EFSA’s temporary TDI (t-TDI) for BPA established in 2015. Overall, the EFSA hazard assessment review process has led to a conclusion that there are low-dose effects of BPA based on very few, lower quality experimental animal studies. This conclusion is not supported by the totality of the available evidence, which includes multiple high-quality studies not considered by EFSA and indicates that the t-TDI established in 2015 is protective of human health.”—From a Forum article by Robyn Prueitt, Ph.D., DABT and Julie Goodman in the April 2024 issue of Toxicological Sciences. https://lnkd.in/eq4pNYc6 #OpenAccess
