Adventurer, Author, Film Maker, and Speaker - I'm totally #Blind

Paragliding is now: KARA-gliding! Many of you know my friend Kara — from No Barriers USA events, her documentary “Kara: Star of the World” (free on YouTube), or other posts where I’ve bragged about her relentless spirit. For those who don’t, Kara suffered a TBI at age 5 when she was struck by an out-of-control skier here in Colorado. The accident resulted in a months-long coma and her life since has been a journey of relearning how to navigate the world with cognitive challenges, vision loss, and partial paralysis. Given the severity of her injuries, it was only natural to question her future. Today, Kara lives on her own and is an active member of her vibrant community. It is difficult of course, and her systems and support are hard-earned, but to me what shines through is the belief that there is a way to pioneer through problems and a hope that persistence will produce alchemy. And what I mean by that, is not “lemons into lemonade,” but rather a deep and soulful recognition of the gifts earned through the struggle. Kara, and her mom, Alice, exude something special – I call it a “No Barriers Life” – and others notice. Take Grayson Luther with Adventure Paragliding in Glenwood Springs, CO. After I shared about another of Kara’s barrier-breaking days a couple of months ago (where she chose to try adaptive skiing at the same resort where she was struck as a child), she finished that day saying she wanted to try paragliding next (fearless!). Patty Martin then commented on my post that her son Charlie is an adaptive paragliding instructor, and it turns out Charlie had trained Grayson on the equipment! Grayson has also suffered a spinal cord injury in his life, which still residually impacts his walking, and this is another connection he shares with Kara and a reason he wants to share adaptive paragliding with more folks of all abilities. “Honestly, that No Barriers mindset is just part of who she is now. She sets those goals ‘to accomplish a barrier’ and does it! I’m still in awe of her accomplishments,” Alice continued about Kara. Well me too, Alice, me too! Congratulations, Kara! Keep reaching! These photos show Kara gearing up for the flight, pushing off, the bright yellow glider in the sky, and Kara and Grayson landing safely in a meadow to Alice’s delight. Thanks for sharing, Erik. Adaptive paragliding offers individuals with disabilities unique opportunities for recreation, empowerment, and experiencing freedom beyond physical limitations.
