-Running Start Mondays- Continuing our run through Robert B. Cialdini's book, Influence - The Psychology of Persuasion. Last week we took a look at real world impacts outside the enclosed world of experiments in how stubbornness of a decision can have consequences. One of the major examples and traditions Robert pointed out that just won't go away is the "hazing/initiation" rituals of fraternities/sororities. An easy hand waving explanation are that such enforces are sadists or psychological deviants. Yet contrary to that belief, the people who were studied on and analyzed, did not show this to be the case. How and why then, are such practices so hard to break? A hypothesis came out from the works of Elliot Aronson and Judson Mills in 1959. Their observation was that "persons who go through a great deal of trouble or pain to attain something tend to value it more highly than persons who attain the same thing with a minimum of effort." The hasher and more embarrassing the hazing rituals they witnessed of the new initiates, the more positive of a view the initiates had of the organization. Conversely, newer initiates who were given easier or no initiation, were decidedly less positive towards the group. So, it's the ceremony itself that produces the perceived value. Does this mean no one would dare try to buck such a traditions? Not so, there has been attempts. "-West Point cadet John Edwards, who was expelled from the U.S. Military Academy in 1988 on charges involving the authorized hazing that all first-year cadets experience at the hands of upperclassmen to ensure that the newcomers can withstand the rigors of West Point training. It was not that Mr. Edwards, who ranked academically near the top of his eleven-hundred-member class, had been unable to bear up under the ritual when he was subjected to it. Nor was he expelled because he had been aberrantly cruel in his treatment of the younger cadets. His offense was that he would not expose the newcomers to what he felt was "absurd and dehumanizing" treatment." Which is unfortunate, considering someone did try to break the absurd and dehumanizing practice, but instead of being rewarded, he was punished for it. Which raises the next series of questions… How do we empower more Mr. Edwards? Can such rituals ever be changed or is it an exercise of futility?

You don't know for sure that it will but just in case something bad MIGHT happen you will stay where it is safe and miss out on making your world a bigger place. When I was first learning to work with horses, I really struggled to do this (watch video). If things didn't go according to plan, it was really hard to move into the next moment with an open mind and an open heart. I would get stuck in my feelings, and it would prevent me from being PRESENT. Emotions aren't bad. In fact, they can carry important information and messages. Where most of us get stuck is that we don't know how to let the energy of emotion move through our body. We become dysregulated, and our body becomes stressed, constricted, and ungrounded. The horses teach us to breathe through those moments, get grounded, and be ok with whatever is coming up, even if it's hard. They invite us to regulate our emotions and our nervous system so that our body can actually let the energy flow. When things don't go according to plan, our feelings are valid AND we don't have to get stuck in them. We can take whatever information the emotion is carrying, and transition into the next moment which is truly a new opportunity. Each moment might be an opportunity for: ✨Curiosity ✨Compassion ✨Calm ✨Care ✨Confidence ✨Clarity ✨Connection ✨Courage When we learn to do this with horses, we learn to do this with ourselves. It's crazy how fast the soul can revive and the mind can recharge with a little down time. When I moved to Brazil in 2020, it only took a few months of surfing, exercising, spending time outside, and meeting new people for me to feel fueled up again. It felt like the color of life seeped back into a world that had become grey. It's also crazy how when you feel full on life, creativity overflows. After taking a couple months off, I had a creative and productive spurt. - I came up with the name Jesus Academy to be the umbrella of all the prayer tools I was building. I was previously using Ut Unum (which no one understood or could pronounce). - I wrote the script for an entire 14 part video series in 3 weeks on how to #Refuel on life. I then filmed and produced these videos over the next 2-3 months. - I designed out, from scratch, a new planner (which I called the Peace Planner) and a new gratitude journal (which I called the Joy Journal) over the next 4-5 months. - I wrote out 30 pages worth of introduction material for both books and then self-published 1,000 planners and 1,000 journals. These came off the line in December of 2021. - I wrote weekly emails to an email list of family and friends that I had explaining the transformation I had felt I had undergone. - Finally, I built the Jesus Academy website from scratch and finished it by January of 2022. I did a year's worth of work in about 6 months. To be honest with you, I kind of re-burnt myself out. But I did experientially taste the goodness of rest. I felt the creative and motivational power of rest. And I began my journey to not just find but live out the balance of work and rest. I'm still on this journey. Life is an art like everything else and I'll never stop learning.

Why boring wins always in the long run Imagine you start a new hobby. You have seen many videos. You have seen how cool and effortless it looks. You see it is fancy and shiny. But what you do not see: The 1000+ hours invested to make it look this. The boring repetitions. And boring repetitions are the basic in everything. When you are not ready to put in the boring stuff, do not start. When you want immediate results, eat some tasty food. But when you want long term success, become boring. When I danced competition I trained the basic step for hours. No fancy figures, no fancy acrobatics, no fancy variations. Just the boring repetition all over again. Does not sound so great, right? But here is real kicker. When you master the basics, you can freely move. And out of a sudden it is fun. Fancy figures, fancy acrobatics, fancy variations here I come! Become boring. Master the core. Self-Affirmations We all experience attacks to our self-esteem when we are rejected, experience failure, don't meet a goal, or otherwise feel like we've fallen short. When this happens, you can use this simple self-affirmation exercise: 1. Write down, briefly, what happened (e.g.: missing the mark on your training run). 2. Now write down your *interpretation* of that event (e.g.: "I can't stay focused on what I'm supposed to do. I'm a bad runner. I'm not going to reach my goal at my next race.") 3. Using "I" statements, name 2 traits or qualities that contradict your interpretations (e.g.: "I work hard. I am driven." 4. Repeat these affirming statements to yourself daily. There is a man in the water and he is drowning! He's kicking and beating the water, barely staying afloat, as he can't swim. A boat comes by wanting to help him, but he says 'No! You can't help me, only my God can help me!' The boat moves along... A second boat comes by wanting to help him, but he says 'No! You can't help me, only my God can help me!' The boat moves along... A third boat comes by wanting to help him, but he says 'No! You can't help me, only my God can help me!' The boat moves along, the man drowns. At the gates of heaven he meets his God, asking him 'my dear Lord, why didn't you help me?' And his God answers 'I sent you three boats, but you refused to be helped'. It's an old story but often these provide the best learnings. First: Just working very hard doesn't make any sense if you don't know what your doing. Find a smarter way to do things. Don't go in the water if you can't swim. Second: Don't trust on karma, a deity, a higher power, 'envisioning', to sort things out for you. It won't - but what it may do is send you the tools you need to help yourself. In most cases your intellect, your body, your potential to seek out help, your learning ability to get better from each setback and your social circle to trust in. Everyone has potential when using their tools correctly. Third: Nothing good ever comes from waiting. This doesn't mean sometimes you shouldn't be patient or practice 'wu wei' - acting by not acting. As long as it's a conscious choice. And it's always better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. Act, and you shall see your potential. We've all been that man at times in our lives...
