Eric Franchi’s Post

Some weekend listening: on this week's Open Market podcast, Joe Zappa and I talk about what makes a great CEO. We dig into the two archetypes - founders (i.e., Brian O'Kelley, Jeff Green, Jonah Goodhart) and operators (i.e., Michael Barrett, Mark Zagorski, Jessica Sibley) - and where they all excel: Product expertise GTM excellence Company culture and values Talent acquisition Link in comments.

One thought to add to this discussion is how to help founders learn to operate as companies scale. Best hire I ever made was Michael Rubenstein who taught me how to build and lead a company. Having a founder-operator team means you get the best of both worlds, though it requires a unique humility and maturity from the operator to put up with the founder, and the same from the founder to be willing to take advice and guidance from a peer. Leading a startup is a team sport, and founder isn't a position on the field - you have to accept that and learn to be a great CEO or you will never get the right people to play their positions around you.
