Growing up, I wanted to be a DJ. Little did I know that my calling would be in professional sales. As I came of age, my studies and my career path changed. I am adventurous at heart and tested the waters of many different professions before landing where I was meant to be. one thing that always let me know I was a good General Manager was when my District Manager and my Regional Manager would wanna have sit down meetings with me and say what can we do to make you happy and satisfied and make sure you won't leave us we will do whatever it takes because we need more "RiRi's" Rihanna like you your an out going employee and does whatever it takes to get the job done your definitely one of the best I was given a raise of the amount I requested they would brag to other Districts about me saying how I would go from my store to other stores that had no GM or AM and get it back into shape quickly like deep cleaning if needed and the proper way of training employees the correct way on how to do their jobs some employees had to be terminated but were replaced and then I started working on getting the sales back up and at times even higher then the sales were before I was even sent to stores where the whole entire crew walked out because their General Manager quit so I hired a completely new crew and trained them all the proper way then we had to heavily deep clean the store then work on drastically increasing store sells while serving the customers all at the same time and yes there were times when I ran the store by myself but I never complained because that was my decision that's what I wanted to do I am so proud I have my mother's work ethic... Just a thought. An important one. One which I question. A hospitality colleague of mine asked me a question today after being told they lost an opportunity to someone that had years ahead of them. Why are the corporate folks afraid of hiring "first time" anything? "Why do corporate folks celebrate a facade of growing people when they constantly after each posting, post for executive property level positions, such as GM, AGM, DOO, they hire people who have had those jobs for 5-10-15 years?" "Have the area and regional managers become complacent, overwhelmed, overworked that they pretend there are no future generations that they can bet on?" "Why can not I not become the next best thing for this organization given my track record and commitment?" So the question I begin to ask, when is it time? When is it time to grow the next generation? When is it the next time to grow the next general manager? When is is the next time to bet on the next guy? I simply answered, "I do not know". Most interesting job title? Chief Marshmallow Officer. 🤔 Is it real? Yes It was me, years ago when I started a bespoke marshmallow company before they became an "in thing". It did well... VERY well. (and it still makes one heck of an ice breaker at networking events... I am sometimes known as "that guy Shannon, the Marshmallow guy" in the right circles) While I am one of those traditional job title holders usually, I also know it's important to brand yourself for your audience. -= LESSONS=- 🎓 Your brand must be relevant to your audience. (duh) 🎓 Keep it simple. 🎓 Be unique. 🎓 Be approachable. ...and a little humor goes a long way.
