I am very excited to announce that I have been promoted to Partner at BakerHostetler!
This achievement marks a significant milestone in my legal career. Since I was a young girl growing up in Queens, New York, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer. I am honored to be part of such a prestigious firm with such incredible and supportive colleagues, and I now look forward to continuing to advocate on behalf of our firm clients in this new role.

IT IS MY 1ST OFFICIAL WEEK AS COPELAND’S CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER.
It is also, coincidentally, exactly 15 years since I graduated law school & our 1st anniversary as Copeland (a $5B standalone company carveout of Emerson’s climate technologies portfolio with Blackstone).
I promised my group and the executive team that I wasn’t going to pretend to be someone else during the six-month interim role: I'd authentically use my way of delivering #inhousecounsel legal services and we'd find out together if it was right for the moment. That promise stands.
Over the years, I’ve received a lot of terrible advice. You will too. The key is to decide what works for you and your team. So here's my IGNORED IT list:
✖ - Be serious to be taken seriously. Nah. I was once very publicly told that I was too nice to be a successful legal leader. You can negotiate billion-dollar deals and make it fun. It doesn’t erode your power. It fosters it.
✖ - Don’t go have a beer with the sales team, keep your distance. Nah. It’s ok to build relationships and get to know people outside the meeting. Guarantee it’ll make the hard days more effective.
✖ - Manage up. Nah. Play the long game. Create meaningful relationships at every single level and treat everyone the same. Let the good vibes bubble up.
✖ - Stay in your lane. Nah. Get as broad as you can and gain exposure to people and projects. Yes, you need to prioritize, but find ways to gain new perspectives and promoters. Give business strategy that includes #legal advice.
✖ - Have deference for leadership. Nah. If we only smile and nod, what’s the point of a meeting and why are you there? Stand up for what you believe in and back it up with data.
✖ - Play it safe. Nah. I kept an empty box under my desk for the first few years of my career. When you are offered an #inhouse role out of business school in September of 2008, are the last approved headcount the week before the Great Recession, and your 2009 law school class is subsequently and unfairly erased from law firm first-year associate roles, each day was very likely to be my last. This posed constant pressure (and responsibility) to squeeze documentable value out of every hour, learn fast, and get work done efficiently. While I don’t still have a box on deck: the proverbial “like it could be your last day” level of effort has merit in all situations, relationships, and opportunities. Don’t waste it.
I couldn’t be prouder of our team of Copeland legal and regulatory compliance professionals, specifically the way we banded together and navigated through a challenging year. It’s an honor to represent the work they do every day to improve our company; help our customers and communities; and lead with integrity and creativity. Long live all the magic we made.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Christine Carney, MBA, JD as Copeland’s Chief Legal Officer, to lead our global legal and compliance teams. Christine has served in legal roles of increasing responsibility in our company over the past 16 years and will continue to be a tremendous asset to our team.
