Last month, I photographed Sir Richard Branson visiting Spaceport America for Virgin Galactic. It was the first time Branson had toured the facility since Virgin Galactic moved its operations from California to Southern New Mexico. On this day - Feb. 15, 2002. President George W. Bush appears pensive as he walks across the Colonnade to the Oval Office between morning meetings. The volume of photos taken during a single day in the White House is huge. So much so that I actually did not remember making this film image until my deputy and White House photo editor Mike Davis brought it to my attention months later. So glad he did. It became the cover photo of my book “Front Row Seat - A Photographic Portrait of the Presidency of George W. 40 years ago today, one nation’s deadliest prison riots broke out inside the New Mexico’s maximum security prison south of Santa Fe. It was one of the worst prison riots in U.S. history. In 36 hours, 33 inmates were killed and more than 200 were injured, some dismembered, others burned alive inside their cells. Fourteen corrections officers were held hostage and brutalized during the rampage. I made these images for the New York Times in 2013. This section of the prison has been closed in for years but the scars of the riot remain frozen in time. #fromthearchives #ericdraperphotography #onthisdayinhistory
