The fishery sector is expected to contribute 5-6% of Indonesia’s GDP this year. Yet, while there are 2.7M fishermen in the country, they make up 25% of the national poverty rate. Rising up to this challenge to bring greater equality and food security are 500-backed aquaculture companies eFishery and JALA, both of which are harnessing the power of technology to optimize profits and productivity for farmers. “It’s ironic that fish farming practices in Indonesia have not changed in the last 30 years, while in all other industries there have been many technological advancements,” eFishery’s Founder & CEO Gibran Huzaifah shared. In agreement is JALA’s Co-founder & CEO Liris Maduningtyas said, “In a sector dominated by traditional farmers and low yields, the adoption of AI and other new technologies could reduce social and economic inequality through an inclusive digital economy.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/4cqhCyC #500Global #500SoutheastAsia #500Strong #startups #technology #innovation #venturecapital #asia #southeastasia #indonesia #aquatech #artificialintelligence #seafood #fish #shrimp Photo credit: engin akyurt on Unsplash

🌾 The Bridge for Rice Farmers Towards Prosperity Almost 98% of Indonesia’s rice fields use subsidised fertiliser. With farmers struggling with decreasing subsidies and low productivity, Yara Indonesia launched the Outcome Based Model (OBM) program last year. This initiative addresses farmers' concerns about ineffective fertilisers by covering any cost difference if yields do not improve with our recommendations. The program encourages farmers to try Yara’s products, resulting in higher yields, better quality crops, and ultimately increasing their income and #prosperity. 🌿 Meet Hj Mamak, a prominent farmer in Bekasi, West Java, managing 40 hectares of land. Initially reliant on subsidised fertiliser, he joined the OBM program, recognising the need for complete plant nutrition. 👨🌾 “Most farmers want high yields with minimal agricultural inputs. I want to set an example for farmers around me that good quality agricultural inputs are necessary for achieving high and quality yields. That's why I accepted the offer of this OBM program.” 🌱 Despite challenges, Hj Mamak feels supported by the OBM program and plans to continue using Yara’s products, demonstrating its benefits for all farmers. At Yara Africa & Asia (YAA), we are committed to Growing a Nature-Positive Food Future, enhancing farmers' prosperity while promoting sustainable agriculture. 💚 #YaraAmbitionActivation #NaturePositive #FoodFuture

🌾Navigating Agricultural Policy and Its Impact in Indonesia: A Closer Look🌾 Hello All! Understanding how government policies, subsidies, and their consequences shape our agricultural landscape is pivotal for the sustainable future of our nation. Let's explore key insights and lessons learned in this critical domain. 🌱🏞️ Agricultural Policy in Indonesia: Indonesia, with its rich agricultural heritage, is heavily influenced by government policies that aim to drive food security, rural development, and economic growth. These policies encompass various aspects, including land use, subsidies, market regulations, and support for smallholder farmers. Impact on Farmers: 1. Subsidies and Support: Government subsidies, such as for fertilizers and seeds, play a vital role in reducing production costs for farmers. This support helps enhance the income of smallholder farmers and ensures their continued participation in the agricultural sector. 2. Market Regulations: Policies governing crop pricing, imports, and exports can significantly impact farmers' income. Price stabilization measures can provide security, while trade restrictions may limit access to global markets. 3. Land Use Policies: Land ownership regulations and land use planning influence who can access and cultivate agricultural land. These policies impact land distribution and tenure security for farmers. Impact on the Environment: 1. Sustainability Practices: Government policies can promote or hinder sustainable farming practices. Incentives for sustainable agriculture, such as organic farming or reforestation programs, can have positive environmental impacts. 2. Deforestation and Land Degradation: Policies that encourage land conversion for agriculture can lead to deforestation and land degradation, affecting biodiversity and contributing to climate change. 3. Water Resource Management: Policies related to water use, irrigation, and water quality monitoring can impact the sustainability of agricultural practices, especially in a country like Indonesia with extensive rice cultivation. 🌿 Key Lessons Learned: 1. Balancing Act: Agricultural policies should strike a balance between supporting farmers' livelihoods and protecting the environment. 2. Inclusivity: Policies should ensure that smallholder farmers have access to resources, knowledge, and markets, empowering them to thrive. 3. Community Engagement: Involving local communities and farmers in policy development fosters ownership and increases the likelihood of successful implementation. 🌱 As we reflect on the intricate web of agricultural policy in Indonesia, let's remember that it's not just about economics; it's about securing the future of our farmers, our environment, and the nation's food security.🌾 #AgriculturalPolicy #IndonesiaAgriculture #SustainableFarming #FarmersFirst #EnvironmentalConservation #FoodSecurity #PolicyImpact

Eratani x SMKN 2 Subang: Collaborating to Cultivate Outstanding Farmer Generations 👩🌾 Reflecting on an impactful week for the sustainability of Indonesian agriculture, Eratani has recently conducted a meaningful social activity at SMKN 2 Subang, a state vocational school with significant potential for nurturing a new generation of farmers. This recent social initiative at SMKN 2 Subang reflects our commitment to significantly contribute to the country through service programs. Attended by 58 enthusiastic students interested in agriculture, Eratani provided them with insights into Indonesian Agribusiness and Basic Rice Cultivation. The presentations were delivered by our Regional Operations Head, Asep Deni Afrianto, and Hilman Hasyim Firdaus, our Farmer Excellence Lead. Previously, students from SMKN 2 Subang had the opportunity to participate in Praktik Kerja Lapangan (PKL) at Eratani farmers' fields. This allowed them to apply their agricultural skills and theoretical knowledge directly, gaining valuable hands-on experience on the field. Aligned with the 2023 Agricultural Census data, which shows that the majority of farmers in Indonesia are over 55 years old and no longer productive, Eratani is not only focused on improving the well-being of existing farmers but also creating a new generation of successors. This is a critical step in supporting the transformation of agriculture toward sustainability. We are excited to welcome more agriculture colleges and schools to collaborate with us in continuing our commitment to drive agricultural transformation. Together, we can realize a future of agriculture that is both sustainable and progressive 🌱🚀 #Eratani #SelaluAdaUntukPetani #agriculture #collaboration #FutureFarmers #FarmGeneration

Meet Boiman, a dedicated cocoa farmer from South Sulawesi in Indonesia, who turned climate challenges into opportunities. Faced with extended droughts, Boiman learned to make organic fertiliser through an IFAD-funded project. The result? Healthier soil and thriving crops. "During the long dry season, almost all the cocoa trees died. Then I tried organic fertiliser in November, the progress was immediately good," says Boiman. Today, Boiman not only secures a steady income by supplying 2 tons of organic fertiliser every six months but also plans to expand his business to neighbouring farmers, improving their livelihoods. His success story highlights the impact of sustainable farming practices. International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Indonesia have invested over US$1 billion in the last 35 years to support inclusive and sustainable rural growth. By empowering smallholder producers and marginalized groups, we aim to drive rural transformation and sustainable livelihoods. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let's celebrate the resilience and innovation of farmers like Boiman, who are contributing to a healthier planet.
