Heard deep echoes of "The Grapes of Wrath" in Mary C. Daly’s (head of the San Francisco Fed) keynote today at the NICRC community development conference. I couldn’t help but draw parallels between Steinbeck's tale of hardship, struggle, and displacement in her remarks on the state of housing in America. Daly shed light on a stark reality: families forced to leave their homes, their communities, and the very places their ancestors have lived for generations, all in search of affordable living. Cities like Boise, once symbols of affordable living, are now on the frontline of this exodus. The included chart comparing median home value to income over time spotlights the central challenge. What creative solutions are emerging in your area to combat this issue? How are we keeping the dream of affordable home ownership alive for young families? #HousingCrisis #AffordableHousing #EconomicDisplacement #CommunityDevelopment #NICRC2024 #SustainableLiving #HousingSolutions #AmericanDreamReimagined #HomeOwnershipChallenges #EconomicInequality #HousingPolicy

🗓️ Today in Planning History: Celebrating the Community Development Block Grant Program 🏘️🤝 In 1974, a transformative chapter was written in the book of urban planning. The Housing and Community Development Act gave birth to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, igniting a powerful force for positive change in communities across the nation. Indeed, in all our work, we are pushing for funds to take land off the speculative market and increase the number of units in land trusts—this is a way to maintain community ownership and prevent displacement even as new development occurs. This is what we mean by pursuing “development without displacement.” Land trusts, especially through community ownership of scattered sites and smaller buildings, are a key tool that can contain displacement and gentrification.

this is a wonderful program for smaller municipalities to engage their communities in proactive planning. We are so focused on community and economic development, but who are we developing for? Without key input from the folks who call your community home, how can you plan for a future that includes everyone? That also means ensuring everyone as a voice at the table, which also means taking your engagement activities to meet people where they are. Don't underestimate the power of reaching out to someone at a neighborhood block party, weekly coffee at the local church, or during Friday Night Lights at the local high school. those are often the most powerful connections a community planner can make. #communitydevelopment #communityengagement #planning #communityplanner

The City of St. Louis Community Development Administration (CDA) recently announced funding to support St. Louis social services, create affordable housing options, and improve infrastructure across the city. The major infusion of funding for the St. Louis Housing Authority (SLHA) will bring 127 units of offline public housing back into service for city families and additional investments will fund renovations including drywall repair, new flooring, new cabinets, and much more. According to Mayor Jones, these investments reflect the city’s commitment to economic justice and the partnerships between their federal, state, and local partners are driving historic investments by creating stronger communities.
