Today, we're celebrating the 4th Anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Council Cemetery Plan 2019-2028! 🎉🍰 It's been four years since the birth of this plan on September 19th. While it may have a relatively short lifespan, let's ensure it makes a meaningful impact! Unfortunately, the previous plan, the 2012-2027 version, had to end prematurely. This week I attended the 2023 Biennial Federal Transit Administration State and Tribal Programs and Transit Partnerships Conference in Washington DC. This conference brought together professionals from all over the country to discuss funding and transit initiatives, and it was so exciting to be a part of the conversation. Some topics I found particularly interesting: 🚃 the intersection between homelessness and transit: certain states have utilized HUD funding to support CDL training for underserved individuals, which not only addresses the driver shortage in transit but also has the potential to help those who are experiencing homelessness with employment. 🚃 the complete streets approach to planning and design which considers the needs of all types of travelers, not just single-occupancy vehicles: and how to engage with state DOTs in this initiative. 🚃 the transition to low and no emission vehicle fleets: the challenges that arise with implementing such significant infrastructure changes and strategies for leveraging federal funding to support these projects. And then many updates on federal funding and policy changes. While some of these topics were quite complex, I am excited to be in a role with Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation where I can continue to learn and stay informed about these important initiatives. 🙂

This is an important, substantial, well-researched and frankly, likely controversial work by my friend, Kara Kavensky. Published today in the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper, "Leaders and legacies: The rich history of those buried at Greenlawn Cemetery" tells a more complete version of something you've probably not heard about or heard only parts of. While I am a big fan of economic development, I am also a big fan of historic preservation, having been a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Indiana Landmarks for over two decades. Right now there is a project underway to build a new bridge, new buildings, and a new stadium for the Indy Eleven Professional Soccer team which promises to be yet another great gem on the Indianapolis skyline. But at the current course and speed, it will be at the expense of something else of great importance - quite literally the paving over (again) of the city's original and most historic cemetery that was once filled with civic leaders and former slaves alike. It's been said that death is the great equalizer, but not here: many of the remains were moved later, but not all of them, and surely not those of the most disadvantaged. The RIGHT way to do this is to simply add some more money to the bond issuance to properly excavate and archeologically document and move the rest of the remains. Yes it will make the project more expensive for the city (and all of us by translation who pay for government here), but I find the alternative the ultimate in disrespect to those who built Indianapolis before us.
