This is about plastics packaging and who should pay for innovation? Ultimately the consumer, however, between the innovator and the consumer there are there are many companies involved in the supply chain. Material companies, machine builders, tooling manufacturers, converters, brand owners and retailers. Each of these businesses are trying to improve their profit margins but are constantly being squeezed by the retailers, who believe they are working in the best interests of the consumer. Brand owners and retailers welcome innovation, as long as it doesn’t impact on their costs. Converters, in most cases, see innovation as an expensive pain in the arse, as in means changes to their normal working practices and disruption to production during development. There are costs for innovation, engineering, machine time, training and of course, paying the innovator. Who should pay for a new breakthrough technology that could save the consumer money, that’s assuming the retailer doesn’t nick it first. Retailers need to financially encourage their supply chain to innovate but they won’t as they don’t see it as their responsibility. This puts the costs and risk back to the converter, who is already under pressure, and has been for many years, to reduce the cost to the retailers. How many converters have an innovation budget?
