“Rox Box,” a food pantry for students and staff at Roxbury Community College, opened this month to address #foodinsecurity on campus, an issue confronting many #Massachusetts college students. We are honored to have been one of two organizations to provide grants to put this #foodpantry into action. https://hubs.la/Q026JZ6T0

Overall, 23% of undergraduates, and 12% of graduate students, are experiencing food insecurity, equating to more than 4 million students who are food insecure. I partnered with Howard University’s VP for Student Affairs, Dr. Cynthia Evers and her team to delve into the critical topic of food insecurity and Howard University's pioneering approach. We co-authored an article, which was recently published in Diverse: Issues In Higher Education (https://lnkd.in/e2gUZGJp). It sheds light on effective partnerships and strategies for addressing this pressing issue, like the partnerships we have with Sodexo USA , The Metropolitan D.C. Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and Harris Teeter. No student on Howard’s campus should ever have unaddressed food needs. If you, or someone you know are in need of a meal or groceries, please contact the Office of Student Affairs for assistance. [To donate to our pantry, please send a Linked In message my way.] #FoodInsecurity #HigherEducation #Socialimpact

Attention educators, administrators, students, and engaged parents! We’ve just released our “Toolkit for Implementing Share Tables in Municipal Schools” which highlights share tables, an innovative and easy approach to tackle food waste in schools and simultaneously offer additional healthy food to students. Share Tables are designated areas where students can place unopened food and drinks they don't want. These items are then available to other students during meal services at no additional cost. Share Tables improve access to healthy, nutritious food for all students, while raising children’s awareness about food waste. Share Tables ensure that federal tax dollars invested in the National School Lunch Program go to their intended use of feeding students instead of the trash. Our toolkit presents a step-by-step implementation process and useful templates, based on best practices identified from federal and state share table guidelines and resources from local governments, nonprofits, and universities. Food insecurity, which the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines as “a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food,” is an important public health problem and an underrecognized social determinant of health. It places a substantial burden on our society through health care and social costs. People experiencing food insecurity often consume a nutrient-poor diet, which may contribute to the development of obesity, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. People who live in food-insecure households also have difficulties in managing diet-related chronic conditions. For ECU students experiencing food insecurity, the Williams-Ross Purple Pantry is an invaluable resource. #ecu #foodinsecurity #foodpantry #highereducation

❔Did you know that: 🔹1 in 5 students do not know that bacon is an animal product. 🔹2 in 3 students do not know that cotton found in jeans comes from a plant.* It’s common for children to get confused about where food comes from. 🌱It’s because they’re learning. That’s why we’ve joined forces with Bakers Delight Healthy Solutions range 🍞 through Growing Good Grains Grants to encourage kids to ask more questions, and grow their critical thinking skills to make healthier choices into the future. 🎁PLUS schools have the chance to win one of 25 school garden grants, valued at $1,000 each. We're supporting the charity School Food Matters to teach children about healthy food and the wonder of herbs and spices. 🌿 🍵 School Food Matters is an inspiring charity aiming to improve children’s access to healthy, sustainable food during their time at school. Our herbal expert Marion Mackonochie joined a soup and bread-making session at Bread Ahead bakery in Borough Market to talk about the health benefits of herbs and spices. Last week the students put their learnings into practice and served up delicious soup and bread at Borough Market to raise money for charity. This is part of a wider campaign to raise awareness of the health benefits of herbs and spices. We are calling on the government to make the following changes: 1. For herbs and spices to be added to the Eatwell Guide. 2. To invest in more research on the health benefits of herbs and spices, to establish how we can best benefit. 3. For the flavour and health benefits of herbs and spices to be taught as part of improved food lessons in school, so we pass on these nutritional benefits to the next generation.
Our #YoungMarketeers made headlines and a pretty penny selling their tasty homemade soups at Borough Market yesterday. Huge thank you to everyone who came down. And a special thanks to Pukka Herbs for your support. We’ll announce how much they raised for The Felix Project soon! #FoodEducation #SchoolFoodMatters #Lunch #Food #Lunchtime #LunchBreak #WhatsForLunch #HealthyEating #EdChat #UKEdChat #SchoolDay #School #Teacher #Teachers #Student #Students #Education
