Public Sector Leader | Innovator | Entrepreneur | Peer Reviewed Author | Keynote Speaker | Facilitator | Strategist | First Gen | Imitated Never Duplicated
Representation matters. I took my toddler to chat with the aquatic search and rescue team while he threw pebbles at the beach. He was intrigued by the commotion and their bright red uniforms so he decided we should talk to them. He had ✌🏼important questions: 1. What they were doing (the answer was training for search and rescue) 2. How come there were no “girls” on their team (that one they couldn’t answer, despite a small attempt). I was impressed that he noticed this. And it immediately got me thinking. Why did a 50-person search and rescue team all look the same? While we can’t know each of their pronouns from a single interaction, what was apparent is that all of them looked fairly similar. Not a single #BIPOC individual was in sight. This isn’t surprising, in some ways. In their recent article, HRB states that 96% of career fire fighters are male and 82% are white. This is problematic because a lack of representation is detrimental to how many see the world, constricting world-views and limiting concepts of the future. So representation matters as does a DEI action plan. But neither are enough if belonging and inclusion don’t lead to new values that can create progress. #impression #HR #hiring #representation #community

As an employment advocate, I have the privilege of helping people navigate the complex (and often overwhelming) world of work. It’s not a role that I take lightly. For me, there are few things more satisfying than helping my clients. Seeing a client secure a job because of the independent advice I have provided, or to get the fair treatment they deserve in their workplace. Sometimes I also help my client’s realise they have made a mistake, help them take accountability for that mistake and help them work towards resolution with their employers. Other times, I work towards both parties agreeing to disagree and to part ways with mutually agreeable terms. Where the chapter can be closed and both parties can move forward with closure. The support I provide is varied: from employment agreement reviews, to representing in performance meetings, disciplinaries, investigations and grievances – I provide a range of support. I have seen first-hand the profound impact that employment advocacy can have on people's lives. For many, finding a job is not just about making ends meet, it's about finding purpose and meaning in their lives. Helping people achieve that goal is incredibly fulfilling and reminds me of the power of human connection and support. Being an employment advocate also means being a voice for those who may not have one. It is a role that requires compassion, dedication, and a deep commitment to social justice. In the end, what makes being an employment advocate so rewarding is the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives.

As a leader, Do know the Human and Employment rights of the people that work for you? In North America, there are well over 2 Million rights cases against employers a year. That represents only 10% of people who have been mistreated by their employer. If you don't know their rights, you may be violating them right now! Do you know what happens to a leader when a company is sued for rights violations? Well let's just say that your company won't risk going through that again. If you are responsible for people, it's your responsibility to know their rights and treat them fairly.

52% of consumers trust employees at a company more than the company or brand itself. That is the sentence that stood out to me the most in the Forbes Agency Council article about Employee Advocacy. But what does this mean? 🤔 When you post about your company culture and environment, people are most likely to believe YOU than they are to believe the company's social media pages. 🗯 People believe people. and organizations should start considering that in their marketing efforts.
