Only by not forgetting the past can we be the master of the future. Ba Jin The work of prolific Chinese writer Ba Jin often took the form of social commentary. His most famous novel, “Jia,” criticized the traditional Chinese family system. His work labeled him a counterrevolutionary during the country’s Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, and he was ostracized from society. In the early 2000s, Ba Jin called for the creation of an official Cultural Revolution museum to document the impact of the era, believing this would prevent China from repeating past mistakes. (Though a museum did open in 2005, it was covered up by the Chinese authorities less than a decade later.) With this quote, Ba Jin points out that no experience exists in a vacuum. By reflecting on where we’ve been, we can chart the course ahead to steer us in a better direction

Head of Strategy | Consultant | Business Developer | Writer | Public Speaker & Facilitator | Arts and Culture Program Coordinator | ⭐️ 2023 French-Australian Excellence Awards - Nominee | Ex Macquarie | Ex PwC
Rupert Myer's address on 'Australia's journey towards becoming a cultural powerhouse' at the esteemed National Press Club of Australia left a lasting impression on me. Myer not only explores the beloved character Bluey but also showcases how Australians shine globally in cultural engagement. His revelation that 82% of Australians were involved in cultural events pre-COVID, compared to 60% in Europe, resonated deeply. At the Alliance Française de Sydney, our monthly 'Philo Bistro' ignites discussions on crucial societal and cultural topics, drawing a lively community of Francophile Australians eager to delve into debates and exploration, regardless of their fluency in French. This zeal reflects in events like the Alliance Française French Film Festival, now the largest French festival outside France, attracting c. 200,000 spectators each year. This fervor is mirrored in the annual pilgrimage of a million Australians to France. Le Courrier Australien - LCANews’s shift from 'French of the Year' to 'French-Australians of the Year' honors the profound affinity Australians hold for French culture. (Congrats to François Vantomme for this wonderful idea). The question lingers: What fuels Australians' profound cultural investment? Survey responses underline the belief that arts, culture, and creativity are fundamental to human existence. Despite this cultural passion, Australia stands alone among the top 15 countries globally without institutions akin to the Goethe Institute or 'Alliance Française’ (at 19m:14s). Myer's recognition of the Alliance Française as a benchmark is both an honor and a call to action. Establishing such institutions in Australia, in line with developed nations, is pivotal to showcasing Australia's cultural brilliance on a global stage. I'm enthusiastic about supporting initiatives like the Alliance Française and collaborating where possible with the French embassy, particularly Karine Mauris, the cultural attachée, to foster these essential cultural dialogues and ventures. Even incremental steps hold the potential for substantial strides in this endeavor. (Denis Morandet Philippe Ostermann Lyn Tuit GAICD) https://lnkd.in/gByFDi4N
