Friends Don't Let Friends Do A Viking River Cruise
So I am going to do something on LinkedIn that I have never done since joining the platform in the early 2010s. I am going to spend an entire post disparaging a vendor with FACTS so that others in my LinkedIn network will not unknowingly make the same mistakes that I made.
My goal is to tell you things as an informed consumer that you should know before spending $15k - $20k on a 15-day river cruise with Viking.
The fact that I am sitting in a Budapest hospital at this moment (on my birthday) dealing with a case of pneumonia that began and developed while on my cruise makes this post deeply personal. If I come off as being angry and/or pissed off, I absolutely am.
FACTS for your consideration:
1) Viking does not put a single medically trained professional on its "luxury river cruises". (Nor do they sell cough drops.) If you encounter a medical problem, it is 100% YOUR problem. Interesting given that the average age of a Viking river cruise passenger is 75 to 85 years old. P.S. Apparently, when you reach 80 or so, the "filter" that tells you to cover your mouth instead of coughing in someone's face no longer functions.
2) Viking will modify the published itinerary for your trip and your shore excursions as it deems fit. If you buy a 15-day river cruise from Amsterdam and Budapest with 10 planned stops in between to see specific things (such as two days in Vienna), Viking will cut the stop in Vienna down to a half day or one full day with no explanation or compensation. In fact, not even an apology.
3) Viking is a private company based in Woodland Hills, California. Their "Customer Relations Dept." located in Cali is the only group in the company that is "authorized" to address customer issues experienced on board. "Customer Relations" will not respond to emails / chats / calls from passengers until AFTER the cruise is complete and at a time of Viking's choosing. ABSOLUTELY NO ONE employed by Viking on the ship (including its Captain, its Hotel Services Director or the Executive Chef) CAN DO ANYTHING to address passenger concerns outside of "policy and protocol" as directed by Viking HQ. FACT!
4) When I left the cruise ship this morning in Budapest for my 7:25A flight back home to the States, I could not breathe. I literally got out of breath walking from the Viking Egdir ship to the tour bus transport so I decided that I would stay in Budapest and seek medical attention for my safety and for the well-being of my fellow passengers on the flights from Budapest --> London --> Dallas-Ft. Worth. When I spoke with Viking / American late in the evening, I was informed that because I changed my flight itinerary at the last minute, there would be $1,300 in additional flight charges. (Same flights / times / class of service / different days = 60% increase in fare).
I could go on with 20+ more specific examples of 2-star or below service, but I will stop here.
#VikingSucks#FAFO
This has been my view from the Viking Ship Egdir for the past two days while docked in Linz, Austria (an unscheduled destination).
You may ask "what in the world does this have to do with business?" Let me explain.
When I started my 15-day river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest on August 18th, I was ecstatic to "get off the grid" and recharge. I had been "running hard" for six months and needed a break.
The first 7 days of the cruise were amazing. Everything went on schedule and according to plan. I thought that Viking was truly exceptional at providing a high end customer service experience.
And then, the cruise started experiencing problem after problem and challenge after challenge. (Change of ship, locks on the river not working, too shallow patches followed by water overflowing the banks and making scheduled docking difficult.) Suddenly, there was an excuse from the Viking crew and management for every missed commitment and countless reasons why they cannot deliver as planned.
Which leads me to the point of this post .... ACCOUNTABILITY.
As professionals and leaders, we are accountable for providing quality service and delivering results in both good times and bad.
This was my first cruise with Viking and this will be my last cruise with Viking. Nevertheless, I experienced a valuable reminder during this cruise of the importance of ACCOUNTABILITY and I am thankful for that.
I'm looking forward to getting back to work!

Over the last several weeks, many friends and colleagues have reached out about my tenure at Continental, why I’ve stayed for so long and would I suggest Continental as a great place to work. I didn’t think much of the question, “Why have you chosen to stick around?”, because anything over a year seems to be uncommon these days and I tend to go for the distance; but in retrospect, 10 years is almost 1/3 of my lifetime. I’ve been devoted to Continental for (almost) a decade.
That timeline is thought provoking and motivating, because those 10 years are a drop in the bucket compared to others on my team, let alone within the global Continental network. Oh, and that network just happens to be full of colleagues who have become friends and leaders who support your professional development journey. Sounds like a great place to work, right? 😎
I challenge and encourage you, whether looking for a change, or just looking at what’s out there make sure to check us out, too. There are many opportunities on the horizon and I hope truly to see you soon!

What is the progress of the Chinese automotive industry?
That is the key question that many Western visitors like myself brought to the opening day of Auto China 2024, this year's most important trade show, that opened its doors yesterday in Beijing.
Together with our automotive experts from the Oliver Wyman Greater China team led by Junyi Zhang, I went to the show to see the latest products and the most impressive technological innovations.
We talked to industry executives and analysts about the business outlook for the Chinese car market and the evolution of consumer preferences in China.
Watch the video to get an impression of the insightful opening day and the rapid evolution of a highly disruptive industry!
