Knowledge retention is important for all organizations. It is the lab manager's responsibility to build plans to retain key #knowledge as people leave the organization. I've found this chart from the Tennessee Valley Authority to be super helpful. I first saw it in a knowledge management conference over 20 years ago and have been using it ever since. The chart shows both the expected time the person has left in the organization, from 2 - 6 years, and the criticality of the knowledge they possess. While this thinking is most often used with regards to retirements, it is helpful for anyone we suspect might be wanting to move on in their career. Note that the chart begins at 2 years, not 3 months. The point is to have sufficient time to transfer the key knowledge. The criticality of the knowledge ranges from generally known to irreplaceable. It also varies in how hard the knowledge is to transfer via cross training efforts. This approach can be very helpful in both building #crosstraining plans and in #succession planning. Identifying people in the upper right hand quadrant of the chart and then focusing cross training efforts to share their knowledge can help prevent problems for the lab. As a young lab manager, we had two retirements from our mass spectrometry team that saw 60 years of experience leave within two months. We didn't have a tool like this and were severely unprepared for the knowledge loss. It took us years to recover. Using this tool on an annual basis can help drive planning to protect the organization from critical knowledge loss and enable the team to plan appropriate cross training activities.
