Delighted to listen in to the Westminster Social Policy Forum on the next steps for Nationally Sigbificant Infrastructure projects. It is great people are starting to tackle the issues head on for better planning and delivery of these projects, with for example fast track processes and design governance for the lifetime of a project. There is a strong very strong pipeline but the challenges are real for these very complex projects. I hope we are building in the lessons from #ProfBentFlyvbjerg which is key. #wspfevents #RICS #RICSPGP #significantinfrastrureprojects #constructiondeliveryexcellence

At yesterday's UDIA NSW 2023 State Conference I sat down with Kylie Powell, Mayor George Greiss and Jenny Rudolph to discuss the successful delivery of the Western Parkland City. The key points from my perspective were: 1. All stakeholders are looking for certainty. Developers, Council's, Utility Authorities and the State Govt. The successful implementation of the Urban Development Program can provide this. 2. Development must be feasible for all types of housing. The cumulative impact of new planning and technical requirements (flooding, canopy cover, stormwater controls, CPCP, etc.) and development levies need to be analysed together. All of these initiatives are very worthwhile, but if it's not commercially feasible, nothing will get delivered. 3. Employment lands are as important as housing. Equal focus needs to be placed on them to ensure communities have access to the right types of jobs in the right places. Finally, we have very challenging Housing Accord targets and the only way that we will be able to hit them is with Industry, Government and Utility Authorities working together. Industry can help by doing some of the heavy lifting with infrastructure delivery and having a Works In Kind policy that doesn't disincentivise this is an important part of the equation.
Today at the UDIA NSW State Conference, our session Delivering the Third City: Western Parkland City featured an industry panel including: Kylie Powell, Director City Futures, Penrith City Council Chris Avis, Managing Director, Infrastructure & Development Consulting Dr George Greiss, Mayor, Campbelltown City Council Moderator, Jenny Rudolph, Chief Executive Officer, GYDE Consulting led the discussion on the status and future of the Western Parkland City. Specifically, the role WPCA is playing in coordinating urgent investment in roads infrastructure in and around the Aerotropolis Precinct and the new structure and role of the WPCA following the transition of staff to DPE. Panelists discussed the major challenges and opportunities facing Western Parklands City Authority including how the infrastructure challenges are being overcome, the future of WPCA and the status of Western Sydney International Airport. One important aspect of the discussion was the need for a coherent employment land strategies and the potential jobs that could result - both of which need to be in place when the airport becomes operational. We thank our session sponsor Stantec, our UDIA NSW State Conference Presenting Partner and social media sponsor Orion Group for their valuable support of this event. #udiastateconference #housing #housingaffordability
