#InspireInclusion - through research. Unfortunately, women are still underrepresented in many sectors, including engineering and in engineering research. But for the cities and towns we live in to be inclusive, and to serve all members of society, we need a diverse and representative workforce designing them. So to help #InspireInclusion, we're highlighting three book titles from our Emerald ICE Publishing collection, by women authors, who are all leading the way in tackling the underrepresentation of women in civil engineering: ◼️ Environmental Law for Sustainable Construction, by Dr Francine Baker and Dr Jennifer Charlson ◼️ Fire Safety in Buildings, by Pat Perry ◼️ ICE Manual of Blue-Green Infrastructure, by Carla-Leanne Washbourne and Claire Wansbury You can find out more about these titles and what else we're doing to help create a diverse research community, here: https://bit.ly/3IxMjUz #IWD2024 #InspireInclusion #InvestInWomen #Equality #Diversity #Engineering

It’s an uncomfortable fact that #womenengineers leave the #construction and #engineering sectors at twice the rate of men. To mark the start of #womeninconstructionweek today, I sat down with engineer Lauren Neal, author of #Valuedatwork to find out why - and what #employers across the industry need to do, both to retain more women in the sector and to make the whole industry more #welcoming to everyone. 👉 https://rb.gy/4aeozb

I help clients design and develop exceptional interior spaces, drive sales growth, and promote careers for Women In Construction and STEM. 🏗💼
Just this week, I had the privilege of attending the "Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering" conference, and there's something I can't stop thinking about. During the conference, SHEBuilds delegates discussed some eye-opening statistics that are hard to ignore, so here's the stark reality we face: 📈 Only 14% of the UK's construction workforce consists of women, and shockingly, 81% of them are in administrative roles. This figure has remained stagnant for over two decades. 📊 Additionally, women represent just 1% of skilled trades professionals in the UK's construction sector, with a meagre 0.7% increase over the last ten years. If you're in a position to drive change within your organization, the way forward is clear. To move the needle toward greater diversity and inclusion in our industry, we need to create a culture of allyship. Allyship means standing together, supporting one another, and working collectively to challenge the status quo. It involves empowering men to be champions of equality, setting clear goals, and committing to continuous learning. We must also help women overcome biases, serve as role models and mentors for the next generation, and encourage the development of not just technical skills but the interpersonal "soft" skills that are crucial in today's diverse work environments. Together, we can harness the power of allyship to drive meaningful change and make our industry a more welcoming and diverse place for all. 🙌💼 #WomenInConstruction #DiversityAndInclusion #Allyship

As a woman and minority-owned structural engineering firm, we embrace the power of diversity while understanding the importance of creating equitable paths for future generations. This month, and all months, we celebrate the achievements of our predecessors and look towards the future of how we can continue to be a champion for women’s equality while raising awareness of the disparities, biases, and discrimination that still exist. We know that it takes all of us, including our allies, to empower change, to shape the future, and ultimately to engineer the change we want to see. Women in construction are making significant contributions to the industry, whether employed directly by a construction company or in a related business such as a brokerage, accounting, or law firm. Many of these supporting industries have organizations dedicated to women's professional development and personal growth. To learn more about the importance of these organizations, such as WOMEN IN SURETY (WIS), check out Nancy Schnee's article in Engineering News-Record (ENR).

👷♀️ Women in Construction Week! Meet Devon and discover her insights on her experience in the industry. Q. What do you enjoy most about working in the construction industry? A. What I find most fulfilling about working in the construction industry, is the strong sense of community. Also, the honesty there’s no room for sugar-coating, there’s a refreshing directness that allows for clean communicating and effective problem-solving. Q. What unique perspectives or skills do you bring to your role in construction? A. I’m such a planner in my personal life, so I love making matrixes and planning schedules in proposal efforts, but I’m also able to pivot quickly, nothing in this industry goes to plan…ever… Q. What advice would you give to a young woman wanting a career in construction? A. Be confident in yourself. It can be intimidating working with majority males – and sometimes you’ll be the only female in the room but remind yourself that you’re there for the same reason they are. #WIC2024 #womeninconstructionweek #womeninconstructionweek

It is always encouraging to hear stories from fellow women in engineering. We are still in the minority but that is slowly changing year on year, as the number of women working within the engineering industry steadily increases. It is great to hear ideas on how we can support the continued growth of women working in STEM and indeed support each other within the industry. What further support would you like to see for women in engineering or in other industries where they are still in the minority? https://lnkd.in/eeDwQzi8 #DifferentMakesADifference #TogetherMakesADifference
