The UAE is a place where you can secure your dream job and enjoy all the benefits that come with having a good job, much like anywhere else in the world. However, it is also a place where one mistake can set you back several years. Therefore, if you are planning on joining a company, ensure that they meet this minimum criteria before you accept an offer: They have a track record. If they haven't been in the market for long, ensure that they are well-funded. If they aren't funded, make sure they have a business that is already generating income. If their business isn't yet generating income, ensure they have sister companies that serve as a cash trap for the company you are joining. If they don't have sister companies, ensure that sufficient cash has already been injected into the business. Avoid the mistake of joining a company where the owner has no steady flow of income – a company where the cash comes from the owner's pocket on a daily basis. Because, at some point, the money will run out, and instead of receiving your salary, you will hear stories. Very good and captivating stories. Stories that will buy your heart the more so you continue working for free. Excellent ones, but the reality is, there is no money anywhere, you will be the one to generate the money that will be used to pay you, if at all the business will survive. Most often, after you start hearing stories, the next thing is lay off, and when you get laid off, not only have you been mentally struggling to be ok with the lack of finances, you carry another load of not having a job and getting to stay in a very expensive country. Once you make the mistake to join such companies, it will take you years to recovery if you aren't smart enough. You always want to please the employer by asking questions that show your enthusiasm to do the job, and with this, you will go asking questions just for the sake of asking, but you forget to know that the employer has a duty to sell their company to you. Employer: Do you have any questions for us? You: Yes I have. How long have you been existing, and what is your headcount? Are you funded, or it's a Preseed, or seed capital and if not funded, what parameters have you established in ensuring a stable business? Ask questions that give you clarity. It is about your well-being, not asking to give a good impression. I wish you don't get trapped in such companies.

To managers and owners of small and medium-sized businesses. Part 2. 8. If you have a limited budget and can pay below-market wages, then offer something else. For example, a share in the company. There is no need to be scared, the total share of all employees can be no more than 20%, and you will always have a controlling stake. What does this give you? - each employee feels like an owner of the company, begins to count expenses, and begins to treat the company’s resources more carefully and economically. - every employee begins to think about how to earn more, how to increase company profits. - you don't need to control it all. This is self-controlled. 9. Always remember that you only have 2 resources - money and time. If there is a lack of money (for good employees), you will have to spend more time (searching for them). If you don’t have enough time, you will have to spend more money (for example, hire an agency to find people faster or pay for paid recruiting services and portals) 10. How else can you control the company’s expenses? Give everyone involved with procurement, supply, and contractors a KPI - how much money does he/she save every quarter? Let them write down all the expense items, how much the company spent monthly on this or that. Next to it is a column showing how much the company began to spend with his/her participation. How much money did he/she manage to save for each cost item, through negotiations, contract revision, or replacing a contractor or supplier? Let them report quarterly, everyone down to the cleaner and administrator. This way you will control the company's expenses. Always remember that the goal of any business is to make a profit. All resources, processes, and tasks must be subordinate to this goal. If you need more detailed advice on building the organizational structure of your business, please contact me at +971506511625. Listen up! April is forecast to be the toughest month for SMEs, businesses and ultimately the people of the UAE. The long Eid break, coupled with this week’s adverse weather, means that for many they have had vastly different trading conditions and much reduced revenue and cash flow which will impact their ability to pay salaries and their invoices, which will trickle down to well, all of us. Given SMEs and independent businesses make up so much of our economy, how can we help them for the remaining days of the month? · If you employ the services of an SME / other business pay their invoices asap or before the end of the month. Not only will this mean they can pay their bills, but the sooner you can do it will also help them sleep a bit better at night. · If you’re in the position to do so, can you pay the next quarter of invoices upfront? I’ve had clients do this for me before and it was the loveliest thing to do. · If you’re tendering/pitching for a service at the moment – make a decision soon and give a business some good news to focus on. I know this would make me happy at #TishTash right now! · Consider buying something from a local SME – treat yourself, stock up your gifting cupboard. It’s true smaller businesses do see the difference from every sale and do a “happy dance”, so make them dance! · If there was a business close to you that was shut or affected by the weather, if it’s trading again, go in and buy a coffee or support them even if you don’t really need to, as every day they lost in trading will impact them. Remember to give tips too, as the staff will have lost money as well. · Add a tip to your delivery person or Uber/Careem as they have lost a lot of work too. Maybe go a bit more generous than normal. I gave extra money to my maid yesterday to help as she lost 2 days of work. Also, something else – many job hunters are waiting on decisions regarding much needed jobs, which have been delayed due to all. If you’re hiring can you prioritise making a decision and giving someone good news right now? Do you have any more ideas of things we can do to support our local business community? #SME #Community #Dubai #CashFlow #StrongerTogether #Economy #MakeADifference #TashHatherall #BusinessOwner #Entreprenuer

Adelaide-based Talent Outsourcing Advisor| Alleviating recruitment challenges with remote skilled professionals from the Philippines
“What skills or industries does hitchVA specialise in?” This week I presented to a group of business owners about my company hitchVA. Instead of boring them with statistics about why the Philippines is the top outsourcing destination and painting a perfect picture of outsourcing to the country, I did something different. I laid bare to them the challenges of living (and doing business) in the Philippines: 1. Approximately 20 tropical cyclones hit the country annually. In Dec 2021, a super typhoon hit the Phils and left regions without power, clean drinking water, and other basic supplies. Those regions were essentially disconnected from the world for months. 2. Being located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, the country experiences frequent earthquakes. In Dec 2023, a magnitude 7.4 hit the southern part of the country. 3. We were colonised/occupied by Spain and the USA for nearly 4 centuries. This somehow explains why we are typically meek, polite, and easily submit to “authority.” By the end of the presentation, my audience understood that: 1. Business continuity plan is a must-have when you have team members in the Philippines. 2. The minimum HOURLY wage in Australia ($23) is more than the minimim DAILY wage ($18) in the Phils. 3. A minimum wage earner in the Phils who works 30 days a month will not earn enough to afford the average monthly of cost of living (~$700 AU). 4. Filipinos are devoted to our families. We are content, grateful, and happy. 5. Filipino virtual team members usually send a sibling/niece/nephew to school or help pay for their elderly parents’ healthcare. 6. Filipino virtual team members are human beings with needs, dreams, and troubles just like you. 7. Filipino virtual team members are worthy of the same level of respect and dignity, just like you. hitchVA does not specialise in any skill or industry. hitchVA specialises in matching business owners with virtual team members through values alignment so that they have a relationship built on trust, respect, and accountability. Please share this with every business owner or professional who is considering to outsource to the Philippines.
