From prior talks and workshops in re/emerging cities across the US, Australia, Colombia, and Western, Central, and Eastern Europe one thing is clear... these cities often leapfrog larger cities in their nimbleness. This is why I'm grateful and excited to meet with leaders gathered by Placemaking Western Balkans thanks to its leadership by Milena Ivkovic. Western Balkans' unique political history is often neglected in appreciating its nuances in its encounter with both communitarian and authoritarian ideologies. From an eco-econ-social innovation standpoint, re/emerging cities are where wiser ideas often thrive. Re/emerging cities' relatively modest budgets compared to megacities (of mega-inequality) create a healthy skeptical inoculation from the Shiny Technocratic Marketing schemes of Silicon Valley's extremist libertarianism and its copycats elsewhere. Technocratic ideology is rooted in the belief that societal issues are best solved by experts with technical knowledge, using rational and efficient methods. It assumes that these experts, due to their specialized training, can apply a problem-solution mindset to find and implement effective solutions. Technocrats are seen as neutral, making decisions based on expertise rather than personal or political interests. However, this ideology often marginalizes non-experts, leading to a divide between technocrats and the general public. Technocratic rationality applies technical means to problems as if cause-effect relationships are well established. Many of us coming from wiser critical technosocial understanding argue that technocracy leads to * power imbalances, * citizen exclusion from policy-making, * and (ironically) relies on a flawed knowledge theory. Despite its neutral facade, technocratic governance is often influenced by dominant forms of right-wing fiscal policies and partisan politics. The extreme PR pushing AI threatens to make all this worse and usher in what I call a new Artificial Dark Ages made of even larger private enclosures, hyper-cultural-monopolies, and “smart” black box algorithmic systems that make the Great Firewall of China look quaint. But hope is far from lost. By embracing innovation mindfully and compassionately, we can build cities that are wise, not just smart - fostering justice, sustainability and a flourishing life for all. 👂For any attendees of the event, feel free to ask me anything here in the comments, or privately via my questions form for this event: https://lnkd.in/enjieubX

Digital Twin for Sarajevo: Professor Hubert Klumpner's chair designed the first AI-supported 4D model for Sarajevo. 🗺️ It takes spatial and temporal dimension into account in urban planning and was the basis for public hearings. “To map the complexity of the city, we need new methods, processes and technologies,” says Klumpner. This is a great example of how to apply the Digital Twin concept: (1) a holistic approach integrating context-specific social data and the natural environment, (2) introducing an agent-based model, and (3) enriching a participatory process. The model digitally replicates the current scenario by real-time monitoring of diverse parameters, whose interactions could be analysed for further potential. It provides a comprehensive digital platform that reflects the region's master plan and will be able to support decision-making on reducing major negative externalities in the city, such as pollution and social inequities. Just by reading the article, it looks great! I recently completed the course on Digital Twins for Smart Mobility at UPC School (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) in collaboration with Aimsun and promoted by EIT Urban Mobility. Thanks to the course I gained insights on a range of tools to cover the whole creation process, such as point-cloud scanning and data collection through IoT. Furthermore, it allowed me to understand the singularities of a Digital Twin compared to traditional simulation models, enabling me to critically evaluate this trend in transport and city planning. https://lnkd.in/dncFM29E

High density is key for succes of cities - bringing higher standards for the citizens. 🌃 Those were the words of the Deputy Mayor of the City of Prague Petr Hlaváček in the inspiring debate with Ondřej Chybík from CHYBIK + KRISTOF ARCHITECTS and Deputy Mayor of Ostrava Hana Tichánková moderetad by Ondrej Vybiral at the Expo Real in Munich. For the last five years, Petr Hlaváček and his team have been working on unblocking construction at brownfield sites using a great opportunity to develop the city where it is most advantageous - in its centre. It is up to the politics to explain the sustainability of the urban development. And by fostering a dialogue and by speaking together we will succeed in planning the city for the challenges of the decades ahead of us. 🌟 #sustainability #sustainablearchitecture #urbanplanning

This was such a great conversation to be a part of and so relevant to the future of Sacramento and the 2040 General Plan! Cities need to radically change and adapt to increasing populations, climate change, remote work and equitable housing before it's too late! #sacramento #architecture #urbanplanning #sustainabledesign
The Future of Cities was the title of our latest NORR ed session. Carol Ross Barney FAIA, the 2023 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal recipient, led the lecture that highlights tested and experimental methods of integrated design approaches. She explains how authentic places and spaces improve the quality of life in a city through expressions of our history, values and future vision. Planning and Monitoring Coordinator @ National Training Academy | Project Management, Architecture Design
I'm Glad to announce that months ago, i had participated in the UIA 2030 award, This award is an Organized biennially in six categories and aligned with the World Urban Forum, the UIA 2030 Award invited architects from around the world to submit their projects. These projects were evaluated for their design quality and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I had submitted in *Category 6: Promotion, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystems* and weeks ago, I had been quite desperate that I couldn't make to the finalists which were announced and i only made it to the pre-finalists but I'm honored that at this young age i could make it to such an international competition raising the name of my country quite high and receiving an email with such an honorable comment: "Dear Aya Ezzelarab, Thank you for your interest in the 2024 edition of the UIA 2030 Award, organized by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in collaboration with UN-Habitat. Having now concluded the first stage evaluation, we regret to inform your project has not been selected to proceed to the finalists stage. This year’s award attracted over 100 high quality entries from around the 5 regions of the UIA. The finalists will now go forward to the second stage and the winners will be announced at the UN-Habitat World Urban Forum (WUF12). We hope that you will continue to participate in UIA-endorsed prizes and competitions." The competition had assessed regionally, representing the five UIA regions: Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East, The Americas, Asia and Oceania, and Africa. The selected entries highlight the power of design to address complex social, economic, and environmental challenges, and showcase progress towards delivery of the SDGs through six categories. On a side note the competition is stepped into project submission, assessment for being a prefinalist, assessment as finalists and winners announcement.
The UIA, in partnership with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), has announced the finalists for the first stage of the second edition of the UIA 2030 Award. The Award recognises the work of architects who contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda. Mόλις κυκλοφόρησε... περισσότερο επίκαιρο από ποτέ!!! Design for Inclusivity [prologue] "NO individual deserves to experience space in a manner that is less safe, less comfortable or less accessible as a result of their identity or challenges. SUSTAINABILITY, in its most holistic definition, cannot be achieved without a collective act. This COLLECTIVENESS is impossible without the INCLUSION of all members of society, yet our current policies and practices in architecture do not yet meet this threshold of inclusion. This statement framed the establishment of the Design for Inclusivity panel, a scientific and academic track within the International Union of Architects (UIA) World Congress for Architecture in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2023. This volume is a collection of works from academics, advocates, artists, practitioners and policy-makers around the world in response to this call to action, and hopes to frame the global discourse around the role ARCHITECTURE CAN and SHOULD play in our quest for a more JUST, LIVABLE, DIVERSE and ACCESSIBLE WORLD." So proud to have contributed... together with Dimitris Kapoukranidis 🙂
