✨ MAGAZINE RELEASE ✨ Oregon Ballet Theatre closes the season with the second installment of Made in Portland lovingly crafted for the cultural explorers that make the city of Portland great. Like fine wine and food, ballet is ever evolving, and it is their pleasure to lead the way with three locally made world premieres. Adding to the OBT repertory this season are Louisville Ballet Resident Choreographer Andrea Schermoly, freelance choreographer named Pointe Magazine’s Top 25 to Watch, Rebecca Margolick, and OBT’s own rising dance maker Makino Hayashi and producer Charlotte Nash. AND in a special partnership we are pleased to shine light on one of Portland's most respected student companies, The Jefferson Dancers. Simplicity is the key. My ballet master, who was a first-generation Joffrey soloist and principal, taught a technique that was rooted in fundamentals. I affectionately dubbed it the "Mr. Potato Man" technique. It was a very straightforward approach to ballet that allowed me to adapt to style. So, when I would audition for roles, there would be dancers who were limited and brought their "Swan Lake" arms into every single piece of choreography, while I could adapt to any style presented to me and spend more time bringing my own personality to the work. Believe it or not, this approach works with all forms of art and the development of AI/ML products.

Ballet North Texas, led by Nicolina Lawson, is transforming traditional theater experiences to embrace sensory-sensitive audiences. Founded in 2017, Lawson's journey, shaped by gender biases, inspired her to create an inclusive dance haven. 👧🧑 Not all appreciate the bright lights and loud music of traditional ballet. Recognizing this, Lawson initiated ongoing projects for a more inclusive dance environment. One project focuses on sensory-friendly performances, featuring reduced sound levels, half-lit house lights, and a relaxed atmosphere allowing audience participation. 🎭 Lawson emphasizes that these initiatives are not mere projects but an ever-evolving commitment. Her second project aims to make Ballet North Texas fully sensory accessible, exploring changes in costume embellishments and floors, for example. She's keen on adopting successful practices like show playlists and synopses for unfamiliar audiences. 🩰 The ballet world, often perceived as elitist, is breaking barriers with Ballet North Texas' sensory adaptations. The MoBBallet Roll Call is being revised and expanded! In 2015 the Roll Call began as a crowd sourced database of the names of professional Black ballet dancers. Founder Theresa Ruth Howard wanted to make this list a Black ballet Wikipedia, and we gradually expanded to design biography pages or as we call them “Artist Pages” for every name on the list. This is no easy task given the lack of documentation on Black participation (overall) but specifically in areas like the classical arts. We conducted deep dive research earlier, and more obscure artists, and even gathered information from their former colleagues to cobble together even the slightest of bios for them. For more contemporary artists we pulled existing bios in company, personal websites, and festival or guesting listings. Although we do not function like Wikipidea where anyone can make changes at any time we encourage artists to view their pages and should they like to make amendments (update information, add or change photos and links) send all the information as you would like it to appear and we will place it in the queue to be applied. We issued a call to action encouraging dancers to submit the information they would like on their page. Unfortunately there was little response. However we do not let that stop us. That being stated. How do we build a legacy within the arts space that outlives us and continue to give value. : This not only shows how important organizations like the Banff Centre or the MUSON Centre are to preserving our work and legacies but also how crucial it is for the media to continue to document, disseminate and preserve our accomplishments. 💯
Internationally renowned choreographer, dancer, and director Brian MacDonald passionately supported the national arts scene and was known for deliberately incorporating Canadian designers and composers in his productions. In 1967, MacDonald was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and The Royal Swedish Ballet. In 2002, he became Companion of the Order of Canada, as he “brought his passion, leadership and tremendous versatility to institutions such as Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Banff Centre for the Arts and the Stratford Festival.” Macdonald passed away on November 29, 2014. In this clip from CBC’s Campus in the Clouds documentary produced as part of their Camera Canada series, Macdonald leads a warmup for the Modern Jazz Ballet Division course in 1961. The course was marketed as offering students the “development of the body as an instrument of expression.”
