We often hear that fighting climate change and moving towards a new energy model is everyone's job. Energy communities, where individuals come together to produce their own energy from renewables, are concrete examples of what this means in practice. The COMANAGE Project , in which Metropolis, World Association of the Major Metropolises participates, is a joint effort to address the barriers and obstacles to distributed production of energy. The energy production of the future, sourced locally, free from large oligopolies, less prone to disruption, and respectful of ecological balance, is emerging, and energy communities are leading the way.

Sustainability isn’t just about the ingredients that go into our products, it’s also about how we go about making them. That is why our team is currently working on a project to install solar panels at our largest bakery and distribution centre in Huntingwood, Western Sydney. This initiative is part of our ambitious plan to transition our world-class facility to 100% renewable electricity by 2029, with the solar installation set to be fully operational this year. Additionally, we've forged an eight-year partnership with the Queensland Government and Stanwell Corporation Limited. This collaboration will connect our Virginia bakery to a pipeline of renewable energy projects, ensuring it operates on 100% renewable energy by the end of 2029. 🌍🌬️ Exciting News from V&A Waterfront! 🌬️🌍 The V&A Waterfront has taken a significant step towards sustainability by signing a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Etana Energy. This deal secures 43GWh of renewable energy annually, covering up to 70% of the Waterfront's energy needs by early 2026. This partnership is pivotal in their journey to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2035. Key Highlights: 🔹 43GWh of renewable energy per year from wind and solar farms. 🔹 Up to 70% of energy needs met by early 2026. 🔹 Significant reduction in the precinct's carbon footprint, with 90% of emissions currently from energy purchases. André Theys, Executive Manager of Operations at V&A Waterfront, emphasizes their commitment to a shared value ecosystem: “By proactively innovating, we can showcase what's possible and inspire others to follow suit.” Current Achievements: 🔹 47% reduction in carbon emissions. 🔹 61% reduction in water use. 🔹 62% of waste diverted from landfills. Witnessing these advanced photovoltaic systems in action reinforced the incredible potential of solar energy to meet our growing power demands. 🔹 Innovative Wind Turbines: The sight of towering wind turbines gracefully harnessing the wind's energy was awe-inspiring.
