Empowering leaders to break free from unfulfilling work and create the business and life they truly desire | Executive Coach & Business Mentor |

📊 After 6 months of exploring what works and what doesn’t on LinkedIn, I’ve gathered some insights that I want to share. To set the context - my posting style is ad hoc, largely unplanned, and tends to be dropped when work load increases. I posted with the goal of testing and learning in order to find the right approach for me. Here's what I discovered while reflecting on the common advice shared about how to approach using LinkedIn. ❌ Selfies do better. Not in my experience (*ouch what does that say about my scroll-stopping abilities 😢) My top performing posts are accompanied by landscapes. Think blue skies, rolling waves, snowy mountains. ❓ Links in posts: I didn’t notice any difference in performance between posts with links v those without or in the comments. Maybe the posts would have done better without the link? Who knows? More testing required. ❌ Videos of silly stuff (my words) – yes they get a lot of immediate likes and interaction but over a period of time other posts do just as well. ❓ Posts do better in the morning. Not discernibly so for me. More testing required on this one. ❓ Consistency. You must post regularly to maintain performance. Not in my experience. I’ve had a few gaps where I’ve lapsed from daily posting to nothing. When I return to posting I typically get the same level of interaction and engagement. I may not be increasing my reach, but all is not lost if you take a few days off. ✅ Effort. It takes energy and momentum. I found 5x per week too much. 3x is more manageable but still quite a commitment. Sometimes it feels like feeding a monster. ✅ Plan ahead. If you are going to have a busy week or month or a holiday coming up get stuff written up in advance. I lost my rhythm when a big assignment came up. And numbers aside it can feel like starting all over again to re-establish the habit and momentum. ❓ Engagement pods. They provide some support and encouragement which can useful. I certainly benefited from the Female Founders Rise challenge to give me a kick-start. Being part of a group can help increase your impressions and engagement numbers for sure. But are they the right numbers? Useful for testing but perhaps not impactful on your business long term. 💡 My takeaway: What works for one person won't work for everyone - listen to the advice - and then choose what you think is right for you and your audience. Be prepared to change things up as you notice what is working and what isn't. What next for me: ☑️ write in advance ☑️ try different formats ☑️ plan further ahead than one day ☑️ test the impact of post timing in a more rigorous way ☑️ use scheduled posts 📝 Share in the comments your experience of the conventional LinkedIn wisdoms - truth or myth?

I know someone who always posts with selfies. It may increase his audience but boy am I sick of seeing his face 😁

Good learnings. Can I moan for a second Emma Steenson...........too many people use Linkedin as some sort of dating app, whereby they continually post pictures of themselves, yet it has no relevance to the content. I would love to know the reasoning. I'm referring to people who do this every second post.

▪️ Emma Steenson ▪️ feeding the monster 😳, you nailed it. I think it needs to feel right for ones own rhythm as it’s hard to peg to “x” a week. I love the idea of posts in advance. I am not consistent with that but it definitely helps! Thanks! Great post

Thanks for the insights Emma, that’s all really helpful. I really agree with your point that it needs to be what feels right for you and your business or you won’t maintain or enjoy it.

Really interesting insights ▪️ Emma - I agree about the effort it takes & have also come to the conclusion that five times a week is too much.
