A journalist covering the Indian music industry and the growth of its independent music scene, I document and analyse consumption and creative trends.
For those in the music business, it's GMR day! For those in the music business in India, know that as per the IFPI's just-released Global Music Report for 2023, our revenues from recorded music grew 15.3% for us to remain the 14th biggest music market in the world. Growth was slower than last year, when our market grew a whopping 47.98%. To put things into perspective, 2022 was the first post-pandemic year. As Shridhar Subramaniam, president, corporate strategy and market development for Asia & Middle East at Sony Music Entertainment, says in the report: “All three big markets - China, Korea and India - have grown as much as or greater than expected. I think that will continue.”

Taylor Swift's Tour Shows Where the Music Industry Value Lies 🎤 The staggering success of Taylor Swift's "The Eras" tour highlights a massive shift in the music industry. As Statista analysis explores, music revenues now come from live performances, not recorded music sales. Swift's tour has already grossed over $2 billion, with $13 million per show. This eclipses revenues even from the peak CD sales era. It reflects how the internet upended music distribution and revenues. 🎧 Once, recorded music sales drove the industry, followed by licensing. But with piracy and streaming cratering sales, live concerts now dominate. Fans crave the in-person experience and connection. 📍 Artists like Swift build the fanbase through recordings, then make their money touring. 📍 The music artifact became promotional material for the live event. 📍 This presents challenges, as touring has high overhead and relies on relentless demand. But for top artists, it captures where true music value lies today. Music has been disrupted, pivoting from products to experiences. 🏟️ #music #valuecreation #digitaldisruption #experience
