It was a big few days on Capitol Hill. I was beyond honored to be a keynote speaker for the Women's Performance Capitol Briefing and attend a roundtable at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) (thank you Katherine Reinckens- Kuminski M.A., LPC (DC,NJ) LCMH (DE), BC-TMH) on Optimizing Human Performance for Women in Military. I was surrounded by greatness. Female leaders that are the best in the world at what they do - from science, research, military, nutrition, psychology, medicine, politics, advocacy and so much more. Wow. I am still in awe. We presented and absorbed so much information on how to further optimize women's health and performance through research, policy, and advocacy. I discussed the power of not only getting women in sport, but keeping them in sport. Did you know that women take longer to recover from brain injuries? I didn't. Until I went through it. I talked about equipment matters and the development of Specialized Bicycle Components saddles and women's specific CamelBak hydration packs. Without acknowledging the different biomechanics, physiology, and psychology that female athletes have, and without actively pursuing ways to address those differences, we will continue to build barriers that keep women from staying in sport. It isn’t just about a strong body and gold medals; we risk losing our future leaders.
I wouldn't be there without my mentor and dear friend, Melanie Strong of NEXT VENTŪRES who not only provides me the opportunity to use my voice, but instill the confidence to do so. She is such a force that changes the world.
Rachel Vickery was an incredible leader for our Sports panel and gave me so much power and grace for my raw speech. I can't wait to work with her more.
Thanks to Momentous (Jeff Byers, Patrick Dixon, Emma-Kate Lidbury and team) for hosting us all. I loved working with Jennifer Wagner of PROSPER., Juliet Starrett of The Ready State, Stef Strack of the Voice in Sport™, VIS™, Katie Rizzone, Stacy T. Sims, PhD and every single person that made this possible. Sharon Bannister gave me courage that I didn't know I could summon - and she has lead the way for more women in sports and military through her preserving and openness. Get ready for the research from Gauri Desai, MSc, PhD - she is doing things!
